Three Commenters and a Funeral

I thought this thread in the comments to STRANGE DAZE: “And the wind began to howl.” was worth bringing forward here and at The New American Digest. It touches upon many of my thoughts and feelings about the Ukraine war. It also refers to a number of sources that I watch hoping for useful . . . well, if not insights, then information about the war on the ground.

Initially, I got a lot of information about the Ukraine “war on the ground” via the Telegram app which sees censorship as system damage and routes around it. Of course by routing around Western propaganda one finds oneself immersed in Russian and Ukraine propaganda.  The other “feature” of Telegram is that soldiers can post their own videos of the conflict. And they do with one side posting pocket videos of death and torture  and massacres of/by “the other side.” Alas, I can see only so many young men’s bodies with canoes carved into their heads or their limbs torn and burned until I must turn away. And so I do with such residual revulsion against all war that my soul is permanently stained.

What is really happening in Ukraine now is at the center of such a gigantic army of lies. The aftermath of this army of lies will persist for decades. Now I despair of learning anything true about Ukraine. What I do know is that every day the warmongers of the world drag us ever closer to an abyss for which civilization will find no bottom. In my life, I’ve been either for or against wars since Korea, but Ukraine is the first war that I loathe from all sides.

With this one, I’m done.

And yet I still persist. Trusting my commenters to enlighten me when they are not driving me crazy of course.

Mike Austin — In the main, I rely upon the Duran and Gonzalo Lira. Tucker as well, but only as a confirmation. Many of my conclusions rely upon my understanding 6000 years of History and how collapsing empires have acted over time. Please remember that both Biden and Nuland months ago threatened to destroy Nord Stream 2.

“Even Brandon isn’t this stupid.” The fate of empires was decided throughout time by stupidity, arrogance and hubris. Biden has never been compared to Einstein.

azlibertarian — In the main, I rely upon the Duran and Gonzalo Lira….”

Sigh. The Duran and Gonzalo.

I started listening to Gonzalo years ago (like maybe 12-15?) back when he wrote to an old blogspot blog (my bookmark for Gonzalo now goes to an “invited readers only” list, so I guess I should remove him). It was mostly economic and monetary stuff back then, which I agreed with, but I just sorta moved on. I was also a daily reader of Zero Hedge and Karl Denninger back then too. Again, I just moved on…..theirs weren’t the only views I wanted to see.

And the Duran came to me via my youtube attachment to Robert Barnes and his sidekick Viva Frei. About 80% of Barnes is great. His views on Trump, Trump’s cabinet and court picks, the problems with the elections, the Rittenhouse trial were all quite prescient, IMO. But the remainder of Barnes….his Anti-War-at-Any-Cost just soured on me. Every time he goes off on Ukraine, I am reminded of the old Leon Trotsky quote: “You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.” He fails to understand that second clause.

And I’m sorry, but I just can’t watch the Duran on any topic. The one Alex’s tremoring vocalizations just remind me of listening to Diane Rehm on NPR (whose has a medical condition causing her tremor). It is just awful, no matter what they’re saying. And I especially just don’t agree with their views on the Ukraine War. They just seem to be Russian apologists more than fair observers of what is going on. YMMV.

I’m not pro-war here at all. I am the son of a Vietnam veteran, a veteran myself and the very worried father-in-law whose son-in-law just last week deployed to a close-enough-to-the-potential-action assignment to put him in great harm. I’m afraid that war may be coming to many of us, and it won’t be good. There won’t be a winner and a loser. There will only be a lesser loser and a bigger loser.

Nor am I apologizing for Ukraine. They’re not just corrupt…..they’re corrupt as HELL. They’re Joe-Biden-corrupt. I have no love for Ukraine…none at all.

But the difference here is that corrupt-though-they-may-be, Ukraine didn’t roll their tanks over their borders. Oh, “borders” you say? Which borders would those be? Do the people of Luhansk and Donetsk (not to mention Crimea and one other…I forget the name) have the right to declare themselves to be Russian and fold themselves into the Russian Federation? I see that as the central question here.

And I think they don’t. Much like our Civil War was as much about preventing the succession of the Rebel states as it was about slavery, I think that Ukraine is right to prevent the LPR and DPR from joining Russia. That land is Ukraine’s. If the people of Russian descent in those areas want to move to Russia, that’s fine….let’em go. But Russia can’t offer their benevolence to those people by moving into Ukraine. JMO, and again, YMMV.

And the Duran and Barnes just can’t understand that another view of the matter exists. They just refuse. I admit to my own biases, as we all must….there are only so many hours in a day, and I just can’t look at each opposing view to test my own. But I do look at enough, and still find that Russia brought an unjust war to Ukraine. It is right that they’re getting their asses handed to them. And I’m just guessing here, based on no evidence whatsoever, but I’d put $10 of my soon-to-be-worthless greenbacks that says that Russia blew up their own pipelines as a way of telling Europe “That cold winter that you’re about to experience? Get used to it.”

FWIW, the recent places I find informative related to the war in Ukraine are twofold:
* Trent Trelenko’s Twitter thread. I don’t tweet, but I do read the threadreader versions when they show up. Trent was the first (to my eye) guy who spoke of the horribly inefficient logistics which are dooming everything the Russians are trying to do.

*And the Youtube videos put out by an Australian guy who goes by Perun. He is very non-partisan here, and if our senior military aren’t listening to him, they’re missing it.

Mike Austin — I’ve gotten used to Alexander Mercouris’ strange speech patterns. It took a while though. Denninger is a bit of a madman, but I do read him.

To call someone “a Russia apologist” or “a Ukraine apologist” is to fall into the logical fallacy of “ad hominem”. Either what a man says is true or it is not and has nothing to do with his thoughts on Putin or Zelenskyy.

Any nation can claim any land it wants. The problem is enforcing that claim. The Native Americans claimed the entirety of North America. That did not work out very well for them. It worked superbly for the White Man, as he had the power to enforce his claim. Likewise with Ukraine. She can claim the Donbass, Crimea and so on, but to enforce that claim is beyond her power. Those who state that all national borders are somehow sacred and inviolable are innocent of History. Ukraine’s borders are as inviolable as she can make them. So are those of the US.

After Biden and Nuland made public threats to shut down Nord Stream 2—and made these threats months ago—it would be odd to somehow blame Putin for that pipeline’s destruction. Putin has become the “go to” for all blame for anything, anywhere, all the time—our own Emmanuel Goldstein. He performs in the international arena the same thing that “climate change” does domestically. The US now blames Putin for inflation and the energy crisis. He is quite the guy!

Both of the World Wars began in Eastern Europe. This new world war is beginning there as well. Even the antagonists are the same: France, Germany, England, Italy, Russia and the US. This is an odd thing, but History is full of odd things.

John A. Fleming — I think that countries do not have a right to exist. If you can’t or won’t defend your country, somebody will come along and take it from you. As you said, it’s been that way since the dawn. So small countries collect allies to protect themselves from the big countries.

I think it has been a fundamental policy of the USA since the end of WWII, after bailing out those war-crazy Euros twice, that there should be stable borders in Europe. Perhaps the 1947 Paris Peace Treaties? As in please, let’s not have any more Eurowars. It worked more or less until the USSR collapsed. First the Yugos decided to settle old scores, and now Russia wants back Crimea and some of the Ukraine. The USA foreign policy says “No, the borders stay as they are, only the alliances can change. And there ain’t nobody that wants a piece of Russia. Been there, tried that, doesn’t work.” The feckless USA no longer has any credibility with Russia.

It seems like the people that run the big powers have forgotten the horrors of the past, don’t care anyway, aren’t that smart, can’t see the future, are too Dunning-Kreuger grasping, and have decided in their folly it’s time to play the Great Game again. This will not end well.

Noted in Passing: Martha’s Vineyard Redux

Fakher K: As a resident of Martha’s Vineyard I must defend my community; my garden is filled with Prize Roses! Some of my roses are valued at over $100 apiece. Can you just imagine if any of these Brown people (who are AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL) got into my Garden and pooped on my roses? This invasion was incredibly stressful for us all; I have been in therapy since this awful experience. I really thought it was the end of Life as we know it on Martha’s Vineyard…How DARE that Governor DeSantis interrupt OUR lives with this nonsense…and don’t call me a racist either, because I have a LIVE IN MAID….and she’s a Black…and I think the Brown people are SO CUTE….

STRANGE DAZE: “And the wind began to howl.”

“Outside in the cold distance,
a wildcat did growl,
two riders were approaching,
and the wind began to howl!
—  Dylan

Last week, someone planted bombs near the Baltic Sea gas pipelines that bring natural gas from Russia to Europe. This caper required a great deal of coordination and technical skill, so it was not a group of kids. Everyone knows it was ordered by Washington and probably carried about by the American military. If you head to the big America media platforms, this act of international terrorism that threatens the wellbeing of Europe is barely noticed. The New York Times is obsessing over some old video of Roger Stone and the hurricane. Presumably, they hope the storm wrecks Florida because they hate Florida. The Post has a below the fold story but they are gearing up to claim the terrorism is part of Putin’s dastardly plan to spread disinformation in the West.

Typically, the regime has a narrative ready to go when they pull a caper, but this time they have just been doing the self-satisfied grin. Radek Sikorski is a high ranking Polish politician who is married to Anne Applebaum. She is a member of the Trotsky cult run by Robert Kagan, the husband of Victoria Nuland, who is the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs. She is running Ukraine policy. Sikorski tweeted this out moments after the attack.

GREG GUTFELD: But they try to erase our message by demonizing the messenger. Trump’s Hitler. DeSantis is a Nazi. Shannon Bream is evil. We know that’s true. We do do this, but our hearts aren’t really into it. And we don’t control the bullhorn. They do. So when a Democrat asks for more funding for stupid crap, sure, we’ll call them socialists. And when they shake invisible hands with somebody, we’ll call them senile. And when they want more than just sex ed in schools, we call them groomers. To be fair, some of them turned out to be true.

JOE BIDEN: We go back a long way. She was 12. I was 30. But anyway.

The BIG Pumpkin

punking1775pounds.jpg

Oregon farmer wins Half Moon Bay pumpkin contest Danika Starr, 9, sits with her father’s winning pumpkin at the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival Weigh-off contest in Half Moon Bay, California. The pumpkin weighed 1,775 pounds, making it a new California record. Starr wins six dollars for each pound, which equals $10,650.

That pumpkin is a horror. A horror. The only good thing to be said about that Frankenpumpkin is that it has been chopped off its feeding tube and can no longer consume small house pets. I know about this. I know it well from the time when I too raised, ignorant of the horror, my own giant pumpkin back in another time in a world well lost…..

My very own BIG pumpkin

The Pumpkin that Ate My Backyard

It began as a $1.49 seedling at Home Depot which I bought for my stepson to plant.

He planted it, as heedless 9-year-old boys will, in an obscure corner of a sandy bed under some ice plants.

It seemed to me at the time that the pumpkin was going to have a short and shady life.

But then, after about a month, the pumpkin seemed to suddenly clamber across my terrace. Then it strangled the corn plants. That gave it HUNGER and it ate the chair. When it approached the deck it lunged, fell back, and sprouted this “fruit” of the vine.

Now the pumpkin is trying to invade my neighbor’s yard. Last night I heard them outside calling plaintively for their new puppy to come back in, “Snoopy! Little Snoopy! Snoopy, come! Come, Snoopy, Come!”

But answer came there none.

Why are they now calling the Amish “Kids?”

“Kids” my ass! Those are the Amish on date night. “SAY THEIR NAME!”

Meanwhile, the need for a sandwich continues among the more soft-spoken Amish.

A Woman for All Seasons: The New Prime Minister of Italy

The dawn of sanity starts to rise over Europe. As noted in American Digest’s header above, “Duty. Beauty. Liberty. Country. Honor. Family. Faith.” Faster, please.

Found via the invaluable Ann Barnhardt who notes (not without reasons) This is the new Prime Minister of Italy. If she is sincere, the Freemasons, sodomites, and Antichurch (but I repeat myself…) will try to kill her. | Barnhardt

Who Is My Enemy?

Who is my enemy? He is the one who:

1. Taxes me into poverty
2. Inflates my dollars until they are worthless
3. Murders children in the womb
4. Vows to seize my guns
5. Allows crime to run rampant
6. Forces me to get the vaxx
7. Threatens to use the US Military against me
8. Forces pedophilia, sodomy and sexual degeneracy onto school kids
9. Uses government agencies to break into my house in the early morning and haul me to jail
10. Punishes opponents of the ruling class
11. Calls me an extremist and an enemy of the state
12. Conducts a coup d’état against a sitting American president
13. Rewards traitors but punishes and kills patriots
14. Hands out medals to those who perpetrated Ruby Ridge and Waco
15. Corrupts all elections and so makes my vote worthless
16. Opens the borders of my homeland to the most violent and depraved criminals ever conceived
17. Appoints Satanists, pedophiles and the sexually depraved to positions of authority and power

Neither Russia nor China nor Iran does any of these things to me. The US government does all of them to me.

So who is my enemy?

Recently, a certain Mr.Putin of Russia delivered a message to the “Collective West” concerning a war. Mr. Putin, alert, focused, and not at all doddering, was blunt:

Today our armed forces, as I have mentioned, are fighting on the line of contact that is over 1,000 kilometres long, fighting not only against neo-Nazi units but actually the entire military machine of the collective West. …

Washington, London and Brussels are openly encouraging Kiev to move the hostilities to our territory. They openly say that Russia must be defeated on the battlefield by any means, and subsequently deprived of political, economic, cultural and any other sovereignty and ransacked.

They have even resorted to the nuclear blackmail. I am referring not only to the Western-encouraged shelling of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, which poses a threat of a nuclear disaster, but also to the statements made by some high-ranking representatives of the leading NATO countries on the possibility and admissibility of using weapons of mass destruction – nuclear weapons – against Russia.

I would like to remind those who make such statements regarding Russia that our country has different types of weapons as well, and some of them are more modern than the weapons NATO countries have. In the event of a threat to the territorial integrity of our country and to defend Russia and our people, we will certainly make use of all weapon systems available to us. This is not a bluff.

For several years one of my go-to YouTube channels for an escape from the humdrum days and the unfolding political horrorshow was Stealth Camping with Steve Wallis.

Genuine, humble, and indefatigable, it was my pleasure to watch Wallis’ life improve as his strange channel devoted to camping overnight in strange spaces grew. I’m sure nobody was more surprised by this success than Wallis. Helping him step by step all along the way was a woman he always referred to as “Beautiful Wife.” And now, suddenly and shockingly, Beautiful Wife — Jessica Audrey —  died in her sleep last week leaving Wallis battered and bereft. Here is a short video that he just released on this catastrophe; genuine and full of heart as Wallis has always been.

Prayers, please, for Beautiful Wife to be taken gently into the heart of God. Prayers too for Wallis in his unfathomable grief and loss.

Update today just to keep folks here in the know about Steve and his plans for the future. Still one of the most genuine of YouTubers, Wallis is searching for a way forward after a great loss.

Emily Dickinson knew about the great pain that comes from loss:

After great pain, a formal feeling comes –
The Nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs –
The stiff Heart questions ‘was it He, that bore,’
And ‘Yesterday, or Centuries before’?

The Feet, mechanical, go round –
A Wooden way
Of Ground, or Air, or Ought –
Regardless grown,
A Quartz contentment, like a stone –

This is the Hour of Lead –
Remembered, if outlived,
As Freezing persons, recollect the Snow –
First – Chill – then Stupor – then the letting go –

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep…

Most children are afraid of the dark. I know that I was. Parents who are too tough deny you the nightlight or the cracked door letting in a distant glow from the front room or from downstairs. Parents who are too kind leave the door ajar or plug in the nightlight. A lot of parents, tough or kind, help you learn a prayer familiar to hundreds of millions of people:

“Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake….”

It is not clear that the prayer helps allay the fear of the dark and of death in that dark, but as children we learn it anyway. It is probably the first prayer that is learned. Its lesson is that, parent or child, we are hostage to fortune or to His ineffable will. Being bound to His will is one of the most fundamental calisthenics of faith.

Most children remain afraid of the dark but learn not to admit it. At some point, you are instructed to grow out of it. You become an adult; no longer a slave to childish fears without foundations. You tell yourself, “I’m not afraid of the dark.” You’re lying but, like so many other lies that let you get through the day, you lie this lie for so long that you forget it is what it is; a lie.

I feared the dark as a child and when I grew to be a man I still felt uneasy when consigned to a room that was “too dark.” I developed some manly and not-so-manly methods for mitigating the dark — light curtains, dim baseboard night lights in the hallway, falling asleep with the television on a timer, votive candles, the whole inventory, the entire catastrophe. After some years of sleeping safe within these rituals and relics, I forgot that I was, in the core of my being, still afraid of the dark; afraid that “I should die before I wake.”

And then I did. Die, that is.

The thing about dying and then being returned to life is that, like a ghost half-seen out of the corner of the eye or in a shadow on the stairs, the experience keeps coming back. You think you’ve pretty much exhausted what you think about it — exhausted all there is to think about it — and then you are presented with a new moment, a new cause for reflection. 19 And the Lord spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt, upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone.
20 And Moses and Aaron did so, as the Lord commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. — Exodus 7:18-20

The Death of Pennsylvania’s Forgotten Funeral Pie Of all the parties to crash, a funeral in the traditionally parsimonious Mennonite community doesn’t seem like an obvious choice. But the funerary feast was a rare opportunity for extravagance among Pennsylvania Germans. Instead of the usual cabbage and dumplings, there was beef, ham, or chicken. Instead of the usual coarse rye bread, there was white or wheat. The fixation on funeral food even made its way into slang: In 1907, a grandmother recounted how “thoughtless youngsters” called funerals weissbrot-frolics, or “white bread frolics.”

But the sweet star of the funeral banquet was raisin pie, a dish so tied to the event that it became a euphemism for death itself. When an ailing member of the community took a turn for the worse, it was not uncommon to hear someone solemnly declare, “There will be raisin pie soon.”

14 Warning Signs That You Are Living in a Society Without a Counterculture:

  1. A sense of sameness pervades the creative world
  2. The dominant themes feel static and repetitive, not dynamic and impactful
  3. Imitation of the conventional is rewarded
  4. Movies, music, and other creative pursuits are increasingly evaluated on financial and corporate metrics, with all other considerations having little influence
  5. Alternative voices exist — in fact, they are everywhere –but are rarely heard, and their cultural impact is negligible
  6. Every year the same stories are retold, and this sameness is considered a plus
  7. Creative work is increasingly embedded in genres that feel rigid, not flexible
  8. Even avant-garde work often feels like a rehash of 50-60 years ago
  9. Etc.

from Hobbes Leviathan/The Fourth Part  (1651)- This considered, the kingdom of darkness, as it is set forth in these and other places of the Scripture, is nothing else but a confederacy of deceivers that, to obtain dominion over men in this present world, endeavour, by dark and erroneous doctrines, to extinguish in them the light, both of nature and of the gospel; and so to disprepare them for the kingdom of God to come. . . .

Secondly, by introducing the demonology of the heathen poets, that is to say, their fabulous doctrine concerning demons, which are but idols, or phantasms of the brain, without any real nature of their own, distinct from human fancy; such as are dead men’s ghosts, and fairies, and other matter of old wives’ tales. Thirdly, by mixing with the Scripture diverse relics of the religion, and much of the vain and erroneous philosophy of the Greeks, especially of Aristotle. Fourthly, by mingling with both these, false or uncertain traditions, and feigned or uncertain history. And so we come to err, by giving heed to seducing spirits, and the demonology of such as speak lies in hypocrisy, or, as it is in the original, “of those that play the part of liars,”* with a seared conscience, that is, contrary to their own knowledge.

The ecclesiastics take from young men the use of reason, by certain charms compounded of metaphysics, and miracles, and traditions, and abused Scripture, whereby they are good for nothing else but to execute what they command them. The fairies likewise are said to take young children out of their cradles, and to change them into natural fools, which common people do therefore call elves, and are apt to mischief.

In what shop or operatory the fairies make their enchantment, the old wives have not determined. But the operatories of the clergy are well enough known to be the universities, that received their discipline from authority pontifical.

When the fairies are displeased with anybody, they are said to send their elves to pinch them. The ecclesiastics, when they are displeased with any civil state, make also their elves, that is, superstitious, enchanted subjects, to pinch their princes, by preaching sedition; or one prince, enchanted with promises, to pinch another.

The fairies marry not; but there be amongst them incubi that have copulation with flesh and blood.

“Goodbye Kids:” To Hell in a Biden Basket

“The time has come when we are at war with NATO and the collective West.” — Russian Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu

And the time has also come when the United States, led by a shadow government known collectively as “The White House,” is represented by a mouth-breathing, incontinent old man held together by his wife’s amalgam of instant oatmeal, neck bolts, baling wire, and Adderall suppositories. Thus, slowly the world turns and step by step, inch by inch, heads right toward Niagra Falls.

Last night President Putin declared that he was ready to defend the territorial integrity of Russia by any means at hand. This morning the West’s propaganda machines (aka The Media) want its illiterati to think he’s a power-crazed totalitarian and went to war with only the aim of conquering the Ukraine. That goal may or may not be true. Most mouth-breathing morons in the “collective West” believe that Russia has done this “without provocation.”

On the contrary, my dear Watson, the West has been poking the Russian bear for decades while pouring a full-tilt “Hate Russia” propaganda stream into the echoing brain-pans of their citizenry. Think of all the standard villains the Russians have replaced in our films and novels and other weapons of mass distraction over the last 20 years. Your standard villains such as oh, “The Hun,” “The Krauts,” “The Nips,” “The Korean Commies,” “The Chinese Commies,” “The Commies,” “The Viet Cong,” “The Black Panthers,” “The Muslims,” “The Mexican Banditos;” all have been replaced by “The Russians” (Mafia or Otherwise.) This relentless demonization has been so successful that the West, with the “US White House” leading the parade, is heading right into the blind alley of nuclear destruction.

This “Hate Thy Russkies” campaign has been so successful that many of Biden’s 81 Million dead voters are cheering nuclear war on. Clearly, since they are willing to elect a bowl floater as president to avoid ‘mean tweets’ they are ready to go along with having the sun pay a visit to the surface of the earth.

Really? Let’s review:
