The last time I was in Los Angeles was in 1988. I took a stroll through Venice Beach. The place was lousy with weirdoes. One guy stuck out: a huge black bodybuilder wearing only the skimpiest of Speedos, roller-skating, and sporting tremendous yellow sunglasses.
Nope. And nope.

I went on 2 0r 3 (was it 4?) working vacations to SoCal, including San Diego and LA. The last one was mostly in LA, where I taught 2 workshops and my family joined me midway through. My inside ace was friends/patrons who had homes near the beach (parking and local vibes).
Walking alone on the boardwalk, I saw a P-51 Mustang fly parallel to the beach, and perform an Immelmann Turn. With my fam, we saw dolphins out possibly a third of a mile. No, I don’t use drugs.
These memories are why I am heartsick when I see the sh!p that has transpired in Cali. Did the mass murder in Sac have something to do with the state capitol being a block away?
Who am I kidding? I have my own 5th Gen war happening right here in WA state. On the state’s list to eradicate are: guns, beef, and automobiles. Entirely or nearly so. yep. Mr and Mrs Washingtonian, turn in everything you have that we don’t want you to have. Suck on our well-monied and ripe old asses because: totalitarians.
So, in conclusion: California enjoy your day. I have more than enough crazy in my state to keep me busy.

A P-51 was being restored in the area I’m originally from, it was on the apron outside a hangar at Lost Nation Airport in NE Ohio. I pulled over immediately, jumped the ditch and gave it a 30 minute walk-around. It was mostly finished, not airworthy.
Fast forward about nine months and I’m twenty miles east at my brother’s house sitting on the patio. I hear a tremendous noise and the Mustang appears at around 800 feet, and I’m telling you that Merlin was resonating in my chest cavity. Outdamnstanding. Unforgettable.
An 18 year old kid could talk his way into one c.1943.
Warbirds give a thunder vibe that it’s hard to ignore. In my day it was the Huey rotors, and the Chinooks and Cobras. Ka-Thumpa, Ka-Thumppa, KA-THUMMMPPAHHH. I was standing on my jeep seat and observing the convoy I was commanding. I flight of Cobras slowly approached from behind and on the road, but nap of the earth. When the lead bird got very close, I pulled down my (9 foot?) and crouched down.
My old man was attacked in the Po Valley by an FW-190.
Yes to WWII aviation engines. Very much yes.

A few years ago, I was shopping in my town and heard a sound that was unmistakable, even though I’d only ever heard it before in films. And a few seconds later, a Spitfire roared overhead only a couple of hundred feet up. I couldn’t get my camera out in time, dammit!

I lived in Redondo for about 6 months in 1980.
Knew good people there, saw it all, did it all.
Most likely never go back.
Seems like now, there’s more places in the US that I’ll never go to than places that I want to go to. Does that make sense?

Never been, never going. Enough of that shite-hole seeps out onto the TV screen that I can just say, “No thanks, I prefer to visit sane places.”

Proof that a once beautiful, scenic, free and awesome state only requires a few years of Democrat rule to become a 3rd world cesspool filled with garbage, homeless, illegal aliens, crime, riots, murder, trannies & sodomites, pedophiles, hyperinflation, and despair.
Best bet- sell the whole damn state to Mexico and let them run it the rest of the way into the ground.

Hell, give it to them but build a wall.

I did a security detail out there in the 90 (diplomatic) I was a fng and pulled night perimeter at the residence. We were next door to Elizabeth Taylor’s estate. Was out there 4 months. Hated the plastic people. But I will say this, I would look out as the sun rose (we had a “good” view) and think “this place must’ve been heaven before all the people got here.”
We visited LA once. Old friends invited us to stay with them, they lived on the coast with a view of Catalina Island. He had a job with the US Health Service, which I knew. What I didn’t know until we got there was that the job included Federal Housing.
They picked us up and we drove up to a gate that controlled entry. There were Marine guards at the gate. The entire area was surrounded by a wall. The wall was patrolled by Marines. We felt completely safe for the entire visit.
There’s a moral here I think.

I think Gerard had a post about Cat Isle once. I was invited to a couple of dinners high up on the bluff, with grandstand views of Catalina and the Pacific at twilight. Keep in mind I watch the colors of light as they change; the island not visible then barely visible in a shimmering light. White-blue and then every minute a change thought the blues until the pale violets that also slowly darken with time.
You won’t find that view in a video, boss.

Who Am I? by Carl Sandburg
My head knocks against the stars.
My feet are on the hilltops.
My finger-tips are in the valleys and shores of universal life.
Down in the sounding foam of primal things I reach my hands and play with pebbles of destiny.
I have been to hell and back many times.
I know all about heaven, for I have talked with God.
I dabble in the blood and guts of the terrible.
I know the passionate seizure of beauty
And the marvelous rebellion of man at all signs reading “Keep Off.”
My name is Truth and I am the most elusive captive in the universe.
Duty, Beauty, Liberty, Country, Honor, Family, Faith — Plus a few simple easy to follow rules for guys
Men saw the stars at the edge of the sea
They thought great thoughts about liberty
Poets wrote down words that did fit
Writers wrote books
Thinkers thought about it
Take it where you find it
Can’t leave it alone
You will find a purpose
To carry it on
Mainly when you find it
Your heart will be strong
About it
Many’s the road I have walked upon
Many’s the hour between dusk and dawn
Many’s the time
Many’s the mile
I see it all now
Through the eyes of a child
Take it where you find it
Can’t leave it alone
You will find a purpose
To carry it on
Mainly when you find it
Your heart will be strong
About it
[Chorus]
Lost dreams and found dreams
In America
In America
In America
Lost dreams and found dreams
In America
In America
In America
And close your eyes
Leave it all for a while
Leave the world
And your worries behind
You will build on whatever is real
And wake up each day
To a new waking dream
Take it where you find it
Can’t leave it alone
You will find a purpose
To carry it on
Mainly when you find it
Your heart will be strong
About it
[Chorus]
Change, change come over
Change come over
Talkin’ about a change
Change, change
Change come over, now
Change, change, change come over
I’m gonna walk down the street
Until I see
My shining light
I’m gonna walk down the street
Until I see
My shining light
I’m gonna walk down the street
Until I see
My shining light
I’m gonna walk down the street
Until I see
My shining light
I see my light
See my light
See my shining light
I see my light
See my light
See my shining light
