Noted in Passing: You go to war in the flip-flops you have on

Armed Veteran Homeowner Gets Into Wild Shootout with Burglars on His Front Lawn

“As I keep looking at the Ring camera I noticed a young man running from the neighbor’s yard across my yard and into the street to meet up with two other gentlemen,” Smith said. “He sprints up my driveway. I can see from the camera he’s hunched down wearing a grey hoodie, and he has a firearm in his hand. He tries to get into the BMW in the driveway. The door’s locked.”

“I grab my rifle and I head outside,” Smith said. Smith was wearing flip-flops, pajama pants, and no shirt.

This veteran went to war to protect his wife who was hiding inside. “There was one gentleman on the other side of the trees and the main one was right here using my truck as a shield,” Smith said.

At one point he kicks off his flip-flop, races inside, puts on clothes, and comes back out.

He says he didn’t have time to be afraid and only time to act. “This was coordinated. They were working together as a team to get this done,” Smith said. This father fears he would have been dead if it wasn’t for his BMW to shield the nearly two dozen bullets.

“I don’t want to die at home. I survived Afghanistan and everywhere else. To die at home? In my own yard,” Smith said.

    Nobody needs an AR15.

hmm. This could be gamed so many ways. A shotgun would be more authoritative, result in proper kills, lack over-penetration liabilities. OTOH, if it requires a pump for every round, the volume of fire, when facing three intruders, is lacking. But, you’d be surprised at how fast you can pump that action when the need arises.

The AR platform will throw rounds way past the visual backstop (hell, it’s no backstop, it’s a neighborhood!) and the extra rounds fired by the fast rate of fire are just little .223 liabilities going downrange. They may not kill, or even stop, a drugged-up burglar on a rampage. OTOH, there are plenty of rounds for any contingency that might arise, and it is easy to address targets at all poiunts of the compass.

Maybe a hand grenade would’ve been handy. Are those allowed in the 2A? /sarc.

Glad he’s okay and his family, too. Hope the hospital dealt with some bad guy wounded that night. I note that when trouble comes, the cops are minutes away. maybe. or, maybe not.

It was a shit show but I may’ve done much worse. Good to take stock and learn from others’ experiences.

This sort of thing–substandard footware for the task– is common in some parts of the US.

Bullets are a construct of the white male patriarchy and will be redistributed in the interest of equity.
Don’t wear flip flops in the forest or you will stub your toes!
Defend yourself while you still can, it won’t be allowed in the West South Africa Fundamental Transformation.

We only get to see one side of it, but judging by the optics, voices, amount of lead flying, and apparent lack of screams and gurgles, this is Sailer’s Law of Mass Shootings in action.

Safer to stay in the house and shoot them from a window??
Let them unsuspectingly and fearlessly walk up the driveway into the kill zone.

I don’t even know where to begin.

Courageously, if I was inside and saw someone outside lurking around with a gun, then I am not going outside based on just that. To get in the house, they would have to kick in the front door or back door which is the fatal funnel. All dirtbags would have to come through the same spot. Bang, bang, bang. Someone else can call 911 after the fact, I will be calling my buddy who has a wet/dry shop vac.

Some years ago I had three tags for doe season. A group of does serially all came through the same opening in the trees and I shot three, a few seconds apart.

There’s an interesting YouTube video from Minneapolis. There was a nut case on top of an apartment building, armed, arguing with the cops. Eventually he got killed. So next day the usual suspects are out with a bullhorn demanding accountability for the cops. Now Minneapolis is already down nearly 40 percent on cops, and ain’t no one gonna hire on these days.

So these folks are yelling about the usual shit and how it’s the police job to arrest suspects, not kill them. Never mind that the suspect was shooting at other people and the cops. Suddenly this gal starts yelling at the bullhorn guy. Where the hell were you when this guy was shooting through my apartment with my kids inside? Where were you when this guy was making all the other residents live in fear of his violent outbursts? I didn’t see you volunteering to walk up and arrest the guy. Where were you?
