Peter Seamus O'Toole (2 August 1932 – 14 December 2013)
Lawrence of Arabia ( 1962........... ........ ........ -> )
Posted by gerardvanderleun at December 15, 2013 11:34 AMIt is great cinema, but any movie that portrays Arab Muslims as anything but blood thirsty homicidal maniacs is a fantasy, and political propaganda.
Posted by: Fat Man at December 15, 2013 6:10 PMMakes for a long night watching that one. It's a classic. Not sure I'd share it with the family for the same reasons Fat Man described.
Posted by: Little Boy at December 15, 2013 8:32 PMMy favorite movie. Of. All. Time. I would argue that it indeed does depict arabs as blood thirsty, homicidal maniacs. Quite well, in fact.
Posted by: SAHMmy at December 15, 2013 9:19 PMThe movie does not betray the book, a masterpiece which is the most insightful rendering of the alien Islamic mind ever written. The fact that he loved them only makes his descriptions more devastating.
Lawrence did not spare the English either.

Posted by: vanderleun at December 16, 2013 6:08 AMYes, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom is one of the great books of the 20th Century. Lawrence was a little weird.
One of the amazing things about the movie is that the 6'2" O'Toole manages to somehow convey the unimposing physical presence of the 5'5" Lawrence quite well.
Posted by: mushroom at December 16, 2013 9:02 AMI've had the DVD for years and still watch it occasionally. The introductory music is beautiful.
Posted by: Ray at December 16, 2013 12:17 PMThe best film ever made was not LofA but My Favorite Year because it shows NYC when it was still a White city. PSO'T made MFY believable as he resurrected Earl Flynn.

Posted by: Dan Kurt at December 16, 2013 1:17 PMWhen I was younger, I really loved this one. Later on, I began to learn more about Lawrence and the culture he was drawn to. Now, not so much. When I watch the film now, I see something else.
Posted by: Will at December 17, 2013 1:39 PMI thought Lawrence of Hollywood, unlike Lawrence of Arabia, was boring and dimwitted. The movie had nice pictures, though.
