"We All Live In a Mellow Submarine:" The Beatles Unplugged AKA The White Album AKA Toke 'Em If You Got 'Em

achillum.jpg

"The relaxing weeks in India [i.e. much hashish smoked in the ubiquitous Chillum -- hence the mellow vibe] yielded a bumper crop of new compositions. Around the third week of May [1968], the Beatles congregated at 'Kinfauns', George's bungalow in Esher, Surrey, and taped 23 [sic] demo recordings using George's Ampex four-track machine. Most, though not all, ended up on the Beatles' next LP, the double-set commonly called the 'White Album' but actually titled, simply, The Beatles. In probable order of recording, these were those 23 demos." [excerpt from Mark Lewisohn's The Complete Beatles Chronicle]

If one artifact summarizes all that went wrong with the era it is the miserable recording "The Beatles". Friend Sippican, of Cottage fame, recently wrote "...like what you like, I don't care." and that is excellent advice but does not preclude commenting.
On second thought, the recording taken by itself is less offensive than my knee-jerk jerk statement - self-indulgent and shallow in the extreme and revealing of curbside pop-level talent by most involved. Instead the throngs of Hipster McGoo koolkids that used that and other indicators of ignorance to further their mistreatment of humanity was, and is, the trouble.
My apologies to any ox gored.

My best friend in college probably played 'Rocky Raccoon' ten thousand times on his record player. He had it set so the needle would return to the same cut.

I loathed the Beatles from the first time I saw them, when they landed at Idlewild Airport in NY and were all over the news. However, I've always been an outsider and am now a crabby old man so I'm sure I must have been wrong. For some reason, however, Ringo Starr never bothered me. Now he seems like a rather likeable old fart. I probably would still take a hammer to McCartney if I got the chance.
