Francis Bacon to the contrary, art thieves - like thieves of any kind whatsoever - could best be dealt with by the perhaps apocryphal Islamic method of having their hands lopped off.

I hate a thief worse than poisonous snakes.

What good would a blowtorch do in cutting apart a steel bridge? Soften the paint, sure. Take it apart, no way.

Rob De Witt: there is nothing apocryphal about thieves in certain Islamic countries and areas (Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan under the Taliban, Taliban-controlled areas today, those parts of Mali that came under extremist control before the French stepped in) having their hands chopped off. It is generally the right hand that is amputated. Considering that in Muslim culture the right hand is used for eating, and the left for what's politely referred to as "hygiene" in the toilet paper-lacking desert, the punishment is also intended to degrade and humiliate. In some cases, they'll also cut off the left foot.
