Melania In the Rain

The always observant and sometimes overly-analytically observant Althouse Says Watch Melania as the band plays the “beauty of the lilies Christ” verse of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” at yesterday’s salute to America.

There’s a long pause, so you think the song might be over, but then it begins —
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free
While God is marching on.

So I was watching very closely at this point, and I found Melania’s reaction fascinating:

God love you Melania. What a joy and source of pride it is to have you for First Lady. Cannot know what someone else is thinking, though it strikes me, as I observed her , that she is genuinely grateful to be living here. So much of what has happened to a girl from communist Slovenia seems like an impossible fairy tale. The Immigrant Dream writ large. It sickens and outrages me that she has taken so much abuse from the mean girls in the MFM. She is definitely a class act.

More American than any of them.

I was sure PC would preclude singing that last stanza as too overtly sectarian . They said “Christ.” What a pleasant surprise! I’m not sure why, but I thought I saw a look of joy, satisfaction and gratitude flicker across the First Lady’s face. Perhaps for just a performance well done, but maybe…

Not just her, both of them.

I don’t know what’s really going in this world, in the swamp and behind the scenes where ordinary people would probably be shocked and horrified. I don’t know why justice seems so long in coming, and why certain people are still walking around free when they should have been jailed and maybe even hanged long since. I don’t know how many white hats are struggling against the darkness, and I don’t know what kind of world my children will inherit. I don’t know if he can keep a lot of the promises he made, simply because what he’s up against seems to genuinely be bigger than most ordinary people could imagine.

But I do know, looking at their faces as these lyrics are sung, that this isn’t a game to them, nor a mere abstraction; it matters, all of it. May God be with them both.

    @ Julie-

    Well put.

  • Roy Lofquist July 5, 2019, 12:21 PM

    Julie, thank you.

She was probably so stirred as to shed a tears, but maintained composure.

At 39.16 POTUS purses his lips, thinking of saying to her, then he does, “Glory to God.” She smiles and shuts her eyes.

Glory to God, Jesus is Lord, bless them!

From your lips to God’s ears, Julie.

We all know why she felt that way, because we all did too. Tears ,Pride;(not false pride)and better yet because she, and all of us know that the tide has turned. (Thanks to the will of God, and the man he chose for this time to be our leader) God has chosen many flawed leaders in the past (David)
God has been reintroduced back into our country, their will be no stopping us if we remember the past.
    Pray and hold the line.

    Great post, G.

They are so genuine. There is no artifice about either one of them. Both of these people love this country, all it stands for,and the flinty, hardscrabble people who clawed their way thru the wilderness and created and built everything worth a damn.
    Pray and hold the line,yes.

Agreed, two patriots. Two genuine people. What a change from the sleaze, corruption, immorality, and treason of Obama and Clinton.

I loved how POTUS slightly swiveled in her direction, and she knew what he was communicating — and responded.

A great couple. A great, classy First Lady. A GREAT President.

“Pray and hold the line.” Words of wisdom.

Both Melania and President Trump nod in affirmation to the up lifting words. How wonderful to see positive body language from our First Family. Not like 44.
