Five Things I Learned From Not Drinking for Four Months

The bottom line is that regular drunkenness is a stupendously costly hobby.
Stepping away from the drinking world underscores just how much people are willing to pay to participate in this particular elective activity, again and again. Every night, millions of people happily fork over seven or eight dollars, repeatedly, for a beverage, just because it contains a small dose of a low-brow drug. And when a drink is, say, only 5 dollars, it seems cheap when it is still stupidly expensive. - - Raptitude

Your Say

The author just figured out that moderation with beer is like moderation with doughnuts.

He just proves the reality that binge drinking is the gateway drug to Fundamentalist Christianity.

Drink before dinner, when you are hungry. Then eat. All the ill aftereffects go away.

When people grow up they figure that out.

I used to drink some decades ago. It was fine for then but not now. I stopped drinking when i gave up cigarettes in the mid nineties. Wont say i miss it even though i do sometimes, but i would miss the money that would be involved to partake in both of them. I just put the money to other things i enjoy. Tools, savings, travel, guns and more tools. It is what it is. But it seemed right back then when it didn't get me into trouble.

My lifestyle was such that I stopped drinking completely for 10+ years, after a lifetime of drinking and drugging almost everyday if possible at all. What I noticed first was how expensive it all had become, at lest 50% more than it was. 2nd was how fast beer alone packed on the tons. Whoa. In about 3 months I weighed 20 lbs more and hadn't even noticed. So I stopped again, for good.

Couple months ago I bought a 12pak of Bud cans and again the price hit me in the face like a snow shovel, and the stuff I got was supposedly on sale. jayziss

Drank one while sitting on the porch that evening and felt the effect by the time I was 1/2way into it. By the time I was done I had a decent small buzz going on, so I grabbed another. 1/2way into that one the seal required breaking and then that *every 10 minute* thing started up. What a royal pain.

So from here on out I'll probably never be again the drinker I was long ago. 2 or 3 is as far as I'm willing to invest and even then it's rare.

Last drink went down on my birthday, 1990. For years I'd drink and smoke weed till it made me sick, and then clean up for a year or two figuring it was the weed that was the problem. I'd always go back to getting buzzed starting with just a beer... Until it kicked my ass too hard, and made me really sick. After four years of nothing stronger than coffee and cigarettes I was tired to the eyeballs of the no-buzz life, 12 step, or no. I decided to go back to the weed, but I made myself wait another year before picking it up again. So after five and a half years, I bought some Skunk (that was the rock star weed of the mid 90's) and rolled me a fattie. Haven't looked back. Yeah, there are times when I get to smoking too much, but unlike booze, it's easy to take a break from it for a few weeks or a few months if needs be. If I had continued to drink I wouldn't be typing this now.

I never cared for drinking. In my entire life I never remember feeling like I wanted a beer. I did drink when I was younger but simply because that's what people do in social settings. I gave it up completely when I was about 28 and noticed an odd effect. Friends who were drinkers didn't really like a sober friend around when they were drinking.
