You need to read the book "A Town Like Alice." The plot pivots quite sharply upon a fine black chicken, and a bottle of beer.

All I care about is how it tastes and how chewy it is. Deep fried. As a kid in the '40s I fed plenty of chickens, gathered eggs, offed them when they quit laying, plucked them, and dressed them out. Had enough of that for a lifetime.

@BillH, I too did that as a kid, didn't care for it.
And the smell, good god the smell.

In later years I found out that if you don't like the skin, which I don't, it's much easier to just slit em from asshole to appetite and yank the whole shooting works off, feathers, skin, all of it, in one fell swoop with a pair of pliers.

ghost - Yeah. Only smell worse than a chicken killin' is a hog slaughter. My Dad used to go every fall to help his younger brother slaughter a hog (for a piece of the action), and always took my brother and me along so we could learn. I learned all I ever want to know about that. They always said if you slaughter them when they're still pigs the smell isn't so bad, but my uncle always slaughtered a full grown hog.
