[Bumped] "When we are looking for a whetstone against which to press and hone the edge of our discontent, any target will suffice."

All the correct, wise, expedient things we can observe about a person's state serve no purpose except as information. It may be useful at some point, even crucial, but it should never dehumanize.
I've lived among "these people" (see the question near the top) by choice, and among other less fortunate wards of more corrupt foreign states by choice, and I know full well their choices, culture, and self-deceptions as surely as God knows my own. But, the bigger wheels that turn above our heads do not diminish the person we find, when we are looking for a person.
When we are looking for a whetstone against which to press and hone the edge of our discontent, any target will suffice. I can deftly point out the stress-points, the causes, the reasons for cynicism and dismay with the best of them. And I have.
But to dehumanize is to invite your Creator to judge you according to your own unattainable-even-to-yourself sense of righteousness. May He have mercy on us all. -- Joan of Argghh! in It's Poppin! Ah man, the building is on fire!

Joan, you have a good "come-from".

Joan, your words are a balm. Thank you.

I probably haven't mentioned it lately because we don't cross verbal paths as much these days, but you and your delightful family are some of my favorite people on the internets, and this is why.

Joan has always been a woman of salt and substance.

Regarding the various imperceptive comments comments on the "It's Poppin! Ah man, the building is on fire!" video thread, it appears none of those people ever traveled or know much at all about America.

I've been to the following places and listened to the Caucasian locals speak, especially to one another, in dialects barely detectable as English. Vermont, Maine, Boston, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Minnesota, New Jersey, West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, southern Louisiana, East Texas. I'm sure there are others.

Maybe, maybe not and perhaps it wouldn't even be a thing to notice except that PC demands we wrap our ever loving arms around this kind of nonsense, embrace it, encourage it and accept all of the other forms of "other cultural" behavior that attends it.

Sorry, but I'll face that judgment.

As a rule I try to keep distance between myself and garbage and see no reason to change.

No matter how many times I see it it is always disappointing to see people with loose morals reveal themselves.

I'm the one who wrote, "Homeless? Heartless!" after all. So, no self-righteous preening or hand-wringing here. Just a gentle reminder to myself more than anyone. They are human beings. Their government has done the true dehumanizing.

It is up to each of us what we make out of the only life we'll ever own and no one else must accept the blame for our choices.

In case no one got the memo, the goal is to prevail IN SPITE of the obstacles.

Caving and rolling over is cowardly and beneath contempt and deserving of scorn.

This isn't rocket surgery and never was.

It's nice to know you're made of oak, ghostsniper. How soon before you break?

The rest of us are merely flesh-and-blood, thankyouverymuch.

What in the hell's wrong with you?
You're going from bad to worse.
Do you need a safe space?

....It is up to each of us what we make out of the only life we'll ever own and no one else must accept the blame for our choices.

I love that comment. Can you please wrap it up nicely in a pretty package and shove....no, ram...that fact down the throats of our beloved Marxist and PC citizens?

So those are the two choices?
To choose not to dehumanize is "caving in" or "politically correct" and thus despicable?

Lots of men went to war and killed many a man they deemed at various encounters as enemy, monster, near-animal, poor slob; and yet would still agree that the humanness is real, and that the capacity for inhumanity is very close to one's own soul. We are not so complicated anymore. Our binary switch has been activated and woe betide any who would suggest a third option.

People who wish to save the rest of us from ourselves haven't figured out how to save themselves. First, heal thyself!

They have just about memorized the words to "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" and are hoping to learn "Juumbaya" soon.

You just made that up.

Joan of Argghh!: Used to read your blog a lot. Sure miss your regular postings.

I am flattered, OldFert. Obviously you are a highly intelligent man! I'd post more, but I'd start to sound as crochety as ghostsniper.

I laugh out loud at the thought of being labeled something because I can separate my soul from the expediency of political hash about The Problems We Face on a national level, and the problem people we encounter on the street. They are grist in a mill that, late in my career, I shuffle money for. So my observations are not that the State can save the class it has created, but that for me, individually, I choose to regard my own soul's well-being.

It's why I can agree with many observations on many political points, and keep my eyes wide open about the threats. I get threatened walking into work. But I must stop short of the blithe dehumanizing. Now, everybody sing! :)
