Your Say

Spoken like somebody who has never endured the horror of trying to buy furniture at Ikea.

Fat Man,

It depends on your mind-set, I guess. As for me, I love IKEA. It's not that I necessarily like everything they have for sale -- my tastes run more towards Victoriana -- but things like their "Ivar" shelving units are fantastic. I've been buying them on and off for over ten years, and they're sturdy and adjust to whatever size and shape of stuff you're putting in them. (Just remember to buy extra braces for them -- putting just one on the back of the shelving unit isn't enough. You really need to put one on each side of the unit, otherwise the shelving unit can start slouching frontwards or backwards over the course of a couple of years.)

For me, half the fun is going into the warehouse and finding the various bits and pieces, and then putting them all together to get what I want.

For me the first time I went to a Ikea store was to furnish the newly built house after the fire. I needed everything. Today, nine years later, less than ten percent of the Ikea crap is still in one piece, or fallen apart.
The last time I went to a Ikea store was the first time they informed me that if I didn't bring my own bags they would charge me five cents a bag to bag my purchases. I shoveled all the stuff (loose) onto a flatbed and dumped it into the back of the car. I've never been back.
