Russia was in fact ruined.

We ruined the country and we did it with malice aforethought. Communism collapsed.
Male life expectancy fell from 64 years in 1985 to just 58 years in 2000. Alcoholism became the leading cause of death of Russian men, responsible for half the premature deaths of working-age Russians. Victory is not a pretty sight. In 1992, thousands of people gathered in Moscow in impromptu markets within earshot of the Kremlin to sell used clothing and other household items, to buy food. Pensioners with military medals begged in the streets. You know when a country is defeated when it sells its women, and the women of the former Soviet Union still sell themselves in huge numbers. If you want to know why the Russians are peevish towards the United States, it is because we set out to ruin them and succeeded. -- Spengler // Some advice from Machiavelli about China

Your Say

Bullshit. I knew a guy who pretty much was the Soviet Union in one individual, and he had some talent to go with his bad intentions. After his wife finally left and he had no one left to expertly beast on, he hung himself. Whose fault is that?

Russia was killed by Lenin and a trainload of Bolsheviks sent by Germany during the Great War to destroy them from within, and nobody blames the Germans. We beat the Russians fair and square, not that they ever played that way.

If the Russians are pissed at us, it's not about the Cold War, it's about foisting democracy on them. They loved having the US as an adversary--in the Russian mind it was their sole claim to greatness. That is why Putin is so determined to have us back in that role.
