Wake up! Time to replace me!

clock-radio.jpg

Every morning, I look at my clock-radio with a mixture of sleepiness and mild revulsion.
It’s an ugly old thing and I’d love to get rid of it and replace it with something with a white-noise feature, a sleeker look, better radio reception, a slot for my iPod, and so on. But the months and years go by and I never do. It’s not that I have a sentimental attachment to the old Sony box. It’s that a) it still works, and b) I know that anything new I buy is likely to die or become obsolete in a couple of years, and then I’ll have to buy yet another new device. And that’s just stupid. -- Obsolete! | The Daily Cannibal

Your Say

I'm like that. If it still works it stays. I only replaced the tv because the tube was going. The living room chairs are a little threadbare, but they stay because they are still comfortable. I believe the polite word for this condition is "frugal".

A new one would give you the idiot blinking 12:00 on a power failure. I had an alarm that I couldn't turn off that I kept for years. Every weekend morning when it went off, I turned it off and went gratefully back to sleep....

My alarm clock is a Montgomery Ward (!) digital model I bought more than 30 years ago (1977 I think--before I was married). I retire at the end of this year and I think it'll stay with me after that (although I'll probably stop using the alarm function).
