I think it is because they did the same thing with music that they did with everything else that preceded them:they tossed it all aside as being hopelessly outdated. For them, pretty much everything started in around 1964, or shortly after JFK was assassinated. And then they simply took credit for whatever they liked about the past. What they don't like is projected into contemporary conservatives in a transparently childish manner. They're scared. Poop in the shorts scared. Boomers had everything given to them by those that work their fingers to the bone to get what they had.
The WWII generation didn't want their kids to suffer the hardship of the depression and the privation of the war.
Proof you cannot give people something for nothing. Really the Boomers are nothing more than a rich welfare crowd.

They want credit for breaking the current civilization and then they each take turns "discovering" you can't break everything and still have civilization.
