Jellyfish Joe

In which Morgan flenses some character who signs him/her self "Joe America:"
"Joe doesn’t figure things out, though. He’ll never admit this, but he swims with the tide. He’s one of these characters who, with a time machine, I can motivate to take on any opinion I want him to…just by figuring out what period in which that opinion is popular, and transporting him there. You want a Joe who believes in slavery? Coming right up. A Joe of Salem who thinks we need to hunt all the witches down? I can do that too. A Joe who wants to crucify all the Christians and feed them to the lions? No mean feat…how about a Joe who believes the Lancastrians rule by divine right? Or the Yorkists? Or Julius Caesar? Or wants to help participate in Caesar’s assassination? I can do it all, just give me Joe’s warm-putty-like mind, and a time machine with a precise dial on it." -- House of Eratosthenes

Your Say

The nastiness is really sad. They tell me I can avoid it if I do my part to keep things positive, and turn the other cheek when people like Joe fail to do theirs. I gave up trying that technique a long, long time ago when I concluded the nastiness is an object of the exercise.

They're nasty because we disagree. They talk about "their side" and "our side"; and the funny thing is, they don't seem to have too much of this passion for collectivized economies, socialized medicine, or anything of the like. I'm sure Joe spent the evening collecting high fives for the way he told us off, even though he never actually said much of anything other than repeat some long-debunked rumors about Sarah Palin and "fossels".

I see Joe as part of a "they"; that's why I consider him to be so important. They don't work with ideas, they just want to score goals. I think they watch competitive sports too much.

I quit trying to have discourse with these types a long time ago. It came from working with newspaper editors in the 80s and 90s. They are unhinged. All you can do is shake your head and either weep or laugh or both, Morgan.

Ah, another pithy comment from arthur, completely avoiding the topic at hand. Just some garden-variety sniping. Pfft.
Speaks volumes about the bankrupt state of liberal thought.

I couldn't help noticing that Joe never used the word "Constitution" in his rant.

(I tried to leave that comment on your site, Morgan, but WordPress hates me. I tried every combination of username and password I could think of, but no joy.)

Now of all your one-liner-critiques-that-say-nothing, Arthur, that is one of the strangest. You make it your business to be just about everywhere, so you can get the last nothing-word, and from what I can figure, you've been here as long as anywhere else. You know full why people read Gerard's pages, it's because he discusses anything & everything that is remarkable. Maybe it's the way I handle losers like you, maybe it's something else. It's usually something else. Regardless of that, I find his digest to be just as fascinating as you do.

In fact, I recommend you try just-not-caring about what people are saying. Step out of that world of yours in which you aren't allowed to notice some women are ugly and some women are beautiful. You'll find it to be a mind-expanding experience. If you have the spine for it, that is.

Who knows? Maybe after a few months you'll find yourself posting some snarky quips that actually say something...and if you get good at that, perhaps you'll work your way up to coherent thought. It could happen.

RickL, I really don't know why some folks are having a problem and others are not. If you send me an offline I'll be happy to make an account for you, which thus far as always worked.

Hey, Morgan:

Sometimes you just run outta cheeks to turn...

I read Joe's comment first, then Morgan's fisking. Joe didn't say anything; his comment consisted of a bunch of random phrases strung together without a topic or a thesis to point the way. It was like reading a slightly less screwy 'Carol Herman' piece.

All of the proper thoughts and ideas were there - the popular ones - and it is obviously by the display Joe has them. However, there was no frame to support them. Thus Morgan was correct to speak of Joe's 'putty-like mind'. There isn't anything solid in Joe but a desire to have people he respects or fears think well of him.

Think about what, Arthur?

You typed some words, but I do not think you have actually said anything.

Oooops! Anonymous at 10:19 am is me.
