My goodness, my goodness; Glenn Gould, the nonesuch. I will forevermore think of what Goethe said upon first hearing the music of Bach in 1818:

"I said to myself, it is as if the eternal harmony were conversing within itself, as it may have done in the bosom of God just before the creation of the world. So likewise did it move in my inmost soul, and it seemed as if I neither possessed nor needed ears, nor any other sense - least of all, the eyes."

Mm, mmm, mmm. May 2012 be a new year for us all, in every respect. You've got a new life, and may we all take that as a commandment.

Glenn Gould appears to be silently singing along as he plays. He's not. Silent that is. On the solo piano pieces you can hear him singing. Out of tune.

I've always preferred the other-than-German interpreters of Bach, and Gould is one of my favourites.

Happy New Year!

My favorite interpreter of Bach is Murray Perahia. His Goldberg Variations are subtle and deeply moving. His English Suite No. 2 is my favorite. And he doesn't sing along. My father does that when he plays, and it drives me nuts.
