Lazarushian-leather Tap Shoes in the Labyrinth

Yes, Din! Din! Din!
You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din!
Though I’ve belted you and flayed you,
By the livin’ Gawd that made you,
You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

In a paper published in the journal Biomaterials Science, the researchers demonstrate a method of generating implantable tissues with functioning capillaries, the tiny blood vessels responsible for supplying the body with oxygen and other nutrients. Lab-grown capillaries are here, 3D-printed organs are just around the corner

Next week I propose we discuss the word ‘niggardly’. As in: ‘this year’s grant to the excellent campaigning organisation Black Lives Matter was niggardly, to say the least. How many flights will they be able to disrupt henceforth?’ Meaning parsimonious or mean. No etymological connection whatsoever with the very bad word — it comes instead from the Old Norse verb ‘nigla’, which means to fuss about small matters. And from which we get the word ‘niggle’. And yet niggardly, too, has caused furore in the past, because of its phonetic similarity to the aforementioned very bad word. If you are determined to be outraged and offended, then you will leap on niggardly with a sort of euphoria, and accuse whoever uses it of racism. Because you are driven and demented, I’d suggest.A vicious reaction to a very bad word

12 Ways Airports Are Secretly Manipulating You  One study found that for every 10 minutes a passenger spends in the security line, they spend 30% less money on retail items. Last year, the TSA announced it would give $15,000 to the person who comes up with the best idea for speeding up security.

Vinkensport – – Each year, thousands of people take up seats along the streets of Flanders. Before each of them is a wooden box, and in each box is a single male finch. At a timekeeper’s signal, the observers begin to count the birds’ calls, making tally marks on long wooden sticks. After one hour, the bird that has sung the most calls is recognized as the winner.

Where Did Time Come From, and Why Does It Seem to Flow? In daily life we experience a three-dimensional world and one dimension of time. But back in the Big Bang—we don’t really understand exactly how the universe was born in the Big Bang, but we think that quantum physics had something to do with it—it may be that this notion of what we would call a classical space-time, where everything seems to be sort of well-defined, maybe that was all closed out. And so maybe not just the world of matter and energy, but even space-time itself is a product of the special early stage of the universe. We don’t know that. That’s work under investigation.

Here’s an SR-71 Story That’ll Make You Laugh In this great little clip, an SR-71 pilot tells a story about flying around the Western United States to build up crew hours when small plane pilots started calling into air traffic control to ask their ground speed. Shortly thereafter, a Navy F-18 pilot dials in to put them in their place, asking the controller to broadcast his speed over the air, a cool 620 knots across the ground.

Sir Salman Rushdie, author of the novel The Satanic Verses, who has been hunted to be killed by Muslim extremists for nearly 30 years. “I am in fundamental disagreement with these left-wing people who do everything to dissociate fundamentalism from Islam. Islam has been radicalized for fifty years. On the Shiite side, there was Imam Khomeini and his Islamic revolution. In the Sunni world, there was Saudi Arabia, which used its immense resources to finance the spread of this fanaticism of Wahhabism. But this historical evolution took place within Islam and not outside. When the people of the Islamic State attack, they do it by saying ‘Allahu Akbar.’ So how can we then say that this has nothing to do with Islam? It must be stopped.”

“After the desultory earlymorning quarrel came the halfstifled scream, and then the sound of his father’s voice counting three, and the two loud pistol shots and he tiptoed into the dark room, where the two bodies lay motionless, and apart, and, finding them dead, found himself possessed of them forever.”neo-neocon When trout swim down…

For the first time since 1848 it’s beginning to dawn on progressives that they won’t have a job in the worker’s paradise. The actual function of future government may be managing the huge complexity unleashed by billions of technologically empowered, essentially displaced people.  If an “idle mind is the devil’s workshop” one can only imagine the devilry that multitudes of idle minds with magic toys might generate.  To control these impulses future society will need — you guessed it — artificial intelligence. I, Robot

Doug Ross @ Journal: SNOPES TAKEN HOSTAGE: Left-wing “fact-checker” reveals it has lost control of its website We had previously contracted with an outside vendor to provide certain services for Snopes.com. That contractual relationship ended earlier this year, but the vendor will not acknowledge the change in contractual status and continues to essentially hold the Snopes.com web site hostage. Although we maintain editorial control (for now), the vendor will not relinquish the site’s hosting to our control, so we cannot modify the site, develop it, or — most crucially — place advertising on it. The vendor continues to insert their own ads and has been withholding the advertising revenue from us.

Old Faithful is sometimes degraded by being made a laundry. Garments placed in the crater during quiescence are ejected thoroughly washed when the eruption takes place. Gen. Gunga Din by Rudyard Kipling. Only poem I can think of that holds my interest all the way through. I struggle with poetry. After I read a few lines, I start wondering what the poet is trying to say, then my mind wanders to other things, and I drift away from the poem. Except for Gunga Din.

You’ll not breach a chink in my armor by calling me niggardly, for I keep it spic and span. Heh.

    I’m holding back taking a cheap shot at niggardly . . .

Trash, you’re only trying to make people snigger.

    BillH, you might try this

    DULCE ET DECORUM EST(1)

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares(2) we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest(3) began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
    But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots(4)
Of tired, outstripped(5) Five-Nines(6) that dropped behind.
Gas!(7) Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
    Fitting the clumsy helmets(8) just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
    And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime(9) . . .
Dim, through the misty panes(10) and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering,(11) choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
    His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud(12)
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest(13)
To children ardent(14) for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
    Pro patria mori.(15)

    Or… Bill H…

    V
    There died a myriad,
And of the best, among them,
For an old bitch gone in the teeth,
    For a botched civilization.

Charm, smiling at the good mouth,
Quick eyes gone under earth’s lid,

For two gross of broken statues,
For a few thousand battered books.

Back in 2005 retired SR-71 pilot Ed Yeilding visited my church. He legitimately holds the record as The Fastest Jet Pilot Ever, certified by NASA. He told me that same story as the video shows – it’s apparently something of a legend among Blackbird pilots.

Ed said that airspace above 70,000 feet is not controlled (mentioned in the video, but the altitude is not given). He said he was on a training flight much the same as the video’s pilot and contacted Denver center to ask permission to go to flight level seven-zero. (Altitudes are spoken as a “flight level,” which is the altitude divided by one thousand.)

He said the Denver controller chuckled a little and replied, “Well, if you can get to it, you can have it.”

Ed was cool as a cucumber when he keyed the mike and replied, “Roger, descending to flight level seven-zero.”
