    Because failure to do so is tantamount to surrender. At this point I merely wish to finish the race and fight the good fight. I harbor no illusions, however. Nothing short of Divine intervention is going to right the course a critical portion of the population has chosen. Excellence, creativity, and beauty are exceptions to the ongoing assaults of dull and vulgar.

    Looking at seventy I find I still cling to the dream of life, in contradiction to knowing I should take five of them with me and be forgotten.

    I’m reminded of a second world war pilot’s recollection of attacking an airfield, describing the AA fire as coming at him like orange golfballs and telling himself if he was hit, it wouldn’t hurt for long.
