About thirty years ago my then barber realizing he was “wearing out” suggested I use one of the women in his salon to cut my hair. His salon was only women cutting / styling women’s hair; there were perhaps 30+ stylists, four hair washers, manicurists, masseuses … he was a “phenomenal” manager / “franchiser” / communicator (I learned by watching / listening) … but there was only “one barber chair”.
My “barber” came to America when 10yrs old, he was not formally educated. … My next barber was less prosperous; three chairs, but he worked alone (no hair wash, no hot towel). I only went to him four times.
He had Tourette’s Syndrome which I did not know until my first time in his chair and after he picked up his scissors. He was lonely and shared a great deal about his life, but he knew how to cut hair. … Admittedly, after the fourth haircut (I am not a gambler) I started to hear a repetition of his life’s stories. …
Both barbers were Italian: a common background for good barbers from ’60s through the end of the last century (in the east coast metro area I call home). … It was obvious to me that each had had associations that facilitated their success; as well my second barber had experiences that may have been adverse to his health. Mean wasn’t bad when I was a kid. It was the way things were.
I worked summer jobs every year after I turned thirteen. I worked for a building contractor on Cape Cod. That guy knew every trick of goofing off that any kid could think of. And when he caught you trying any of them he’d peal the skin off you verbally, every time. Taught me that I couldn’t get away with anything. So don’t try. Now that I think back on it, Old Charlie Eastman cured me of most of my bad work habits in one summer. And I never thanked him for it.
Frankly kids need to get their asses kicked, early and often. Straighten out and fly right! But you can’t do that anymore.
Many, many decades later I was doing a job at Logan Airport. Upgrading and expanding the telephone system for FedEx. They sent me a new guy (The Kid) and I laid out to him the new phone wire that needed to be run and how to connect it. Then I went on to install and program the new cabinets, line cards and feeds.
Several hours later I finished and went down stairs to the new office space to check on the kid. I found him sitting in a chair in front of a door to one of the new offices.
“Finished?”, I asked.
“No”, he replied. “This office has just been painted and they asked me to wait until it’s dry”.
As I remembered, that room had four of the thirty odd new wires; “So are the rest of the wires run then?”.
“No.” “These runs were numbered one to four and I figured I needed to run these first”. “So I’m waiting.”
I looked at him closely for a few moments. Then I left and went upstairs and found a phone. I called the Installation Supervisor and had a brief conversation. After a short interval of banging his head on his desk, he beeped the kid and had him return to the office. His next assignment was in the warehouse.
I finished running the new wire and making the new connections.
When I got back to the office the district manager complimented me on not losing my temper. And not being mean.
Frankly, I think Charlie Eastman is disgusted. Again.

The lady at the IGA deli told me the other day they are cutting the deli hours because they can’t get any help. I told her they have to pay more. She said they are paying $15/hr but the people that are hired are young and unlearnable/unteachable. I asked her what she meant. She said last week they hired a 19 yo woman and she did not understand basic english nor could she follow even the most basic of direction. She said she told the 19yo to remove the permanent plastic factory wrapper from a large ham and replace it with the company plastic wrap that was easily removeable. She came back 10 mins later and the 19yo had hacked the ham to hell with a knife trying to get the plastic off so bad that it was able to be sliced for customers and had to receive extensive repair and waste.
They also hired an 18yo male that seemed clinically retarded (her words) in that he could barely understand 3 words in a sentence. Both examples lasted less than a day, and all the people that have applied are cut from the same pattern. The McDonalds across the road from the IGA has been running the same help wanted ad on their outdoor sign for more than 2 years.
In another 10 years there will be nobody left in the US to do the work that needs doing. If the country still exists by then, it will be heading down hill at a high rate of speed. Kunstlers book about the “Long Emergency” is coming true before your very eyes and the rot is radiating out from the center. Probably can’t be fixed so you have to create your own world and stay in it.
