I think they need to get that whole “creation” thing worked out first before they try to look back at it.
Big bang?
Please.
What was going on before that?
My take is the current big bang wasn’t the first one but the last one, in a never ending series of them.
Or, if you go the other way, what was going on before the adam and eve deal?
Nothing at all? Ever? (ever’s a long time)
Maybe someday they’ll know for sure, but I’m not hopeful. shrug
Before the Big Bang was the not in Time existence of the Creator… who got, well, lonely. And what can be more Big Bangish than:
“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
Seems pretty big bangish to me. Efficient too. Just like evolution.
The current thinking about the Webb is that it will be able to see very far out and hence very far back into time. They are hoping to see galaxies as they were only (“only” ) 100 million years after God spoke.
Pity about the detail though. Little things like day and night being established 3 days before the Sun was created, for example.
“A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
As is an inability to understand that Genesis, like much of the Bible, was written as allegorical text, used to illustrate complex metaphysical and moral truths to preliterate people.
(Another example: the Fall, a beautiful metaphor for whatever complex process led to humanity’s evolution into thinking beings, and the resulting loss of innocence we possessed as mere animals.)
damned fine video.
I’ll contribute on lilliputian scale Venus over home by mini ipad-
Very nice.
appreciated.
We have two creation myths, the Book of Genesis and the scientific Big Bang/Evolution/Wham-Here-We-Are. Both of them do what myths do – explain how things came to be. Both of them speak of the same events but in very different languages. If the shepherds of ancient Palestine knew more about cosmology and quantum mechanics, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
