Oral Arguments Postponed As Justice Sotomayor Gets Gavel Stuck Up Her Nose Again |  “Dang it, Sonia!” shouted Kavanaugh as he looked over and saw her frantically trying to get the wooden mallet unstuck. “How many times do we have to tell you not to do that? I’d whoop you if you were my kid!” Kavanaugh then cracked open a tall, cool Keystone Light to take the edge off.

The Histrionics and Melodrama Around 1/6 Are Laughable, but They Serve Several Key Purposes The number of people killed by pro-Trump supporters at the January 6 Capitol riot is equal to the number of pro-Trump supporters who brandished guns or knives inside the Capitol. That is the same number as the total of Americans who — after a full year of a Democrat-led DOJ conducting what is heralded as “the most expansive federal law enforcement investigation in US history” — have been charged with inciting insurrection, sedition, treason or conspiracy to overthrow the government as a result of that riot one year ago. Coincidentally, it is the same number as Americans who ended up being criminally charged by the Mueller probe of conspiring with Russia over the 2016 election, and the number of wounds — grave or light — which AOC, who finally emerged at night to assure an on-edge nation that she was “okay” while waiting in an office building away from the riot at the rotunda, sustained on that solemn day.

That number is zero

None of My Best Friends Are Black –  I never thought that black people were any more dangerous than white people. Experience alone taught me that. And we have nothing to gain and everything to lose when groups live in poverty. But I often wonder about the black people I knew in my earlier years. Would they still call me their friend? Or would they call me a racist and judge me guilty of crimes I never committed and of harboring thoughts that never entered my head? Would they demand reparations for things I never stole or did? Would I be a still be a friend or an enemy?

The Party-of-Chaos (the one headed by the ectoplasmic “Joe Biden”) does not want to let go of Covid-19, its Swiss army knife of destruction. With Covid-19, you can push people around and mess with their lives every which way, shut down their businesses, lock them in their homes, screw them out of their livelihoods, delete their reputations, board-up their social venues, cancel their careers, revoke their licenses, drag them into court, fine them into penury, cram them into prison camps, and much more.

The Machine, the technium, the metaverse: whatever we name our 21st century Babel, and however overwhelming it seems to us in the moment, it can never conquer in the end, because it is a manifestation of human will and not the will of God. 21 Grams: The Weight of The Soul  There remained but one more channel of loss to explore, the expiration of all but the residual air in the lungs. Getting upon the bed myself, my colleague put the beam at actual balance. Inspiration and expiration of air as forcibly as possible by me had no effect upon the beam. My colleague got upon the bed and I placed the beam at balance. Forcible inspiration and expiration of air on his part had no effect. In this case we certainly have an inexplicable loss of weight of three-fourths of an ounce. Is it the soul substance? How other shall we explain it?

A worthy addition to Monday’s Strange Daze is James Kunstler’s latest pondering. It’s a clusterfuck.

      I agree. Done.

Why do we hate newer music the older we get?

I started hating newer music when I was 10. It was 1955.

    • Mike Austin January 10, 2022, 11:06 AM

I have 1000 vinyl recordings. I think the newest music on them is Prokofiev. I have hundreds of CDs too. Most are World Music—Africa, Latin America and so on. And pop music? None. I did not acquire a hi-end audiophile system to listen to that crap.

      • James ONeil January 10, 2022, 1:34 PM

My vinyl sack is now only a few hundred records, CDs in the same range. I do have 3,497 tunes on this computer, many of them transferred from my records & CDs.
A bluetooth thingy if I want to hear them through my better amps and speakers.

My taste in music is quite catholic, some of just about everything except rap. Taste changes with mood or activity of course; Irish folk for beer brewing, Rock for playalong, classical for relaxation or seduction…

        • Mike Austin January 10, 2022, 3:27 PM

Then you are James—drunk or sober—a true music aficionado. I am a pure audiophile in that I do not listen to music at my home unless it is played through my $25,000 audio system. Away from home it is of course a different thing. I would ask if you have ever listened to a hi-end audio system; and if so, what did you think?

          • ghostsniper January 11, 2022, 4:50 AM

For fast listens I have a brand new Moukey receiver and 2 Polk speakers connected to my Win10 machine which has an external Seagate 2TB HD with all my media files collected over the decades. 18k MP3’s, 8k music vids, 2k concerts.

For serious listening I fire up my 70’s era “audio furniture”, big, bold, beautiful equipment that delights the eye and tantalizes the organic aural glands. High output, custom contouring, pure eurphoria. Everybody that ever seen and heard my rig was knocked right the fuk out on the spot. Watching a 10″ reel to reel spinning at 15 ips has an hypnotic effect that none can resist. One of these:

Reel to reel offers the finest analog playback possible. Vinyl is a very close second.

          • James ONeil January 11, 2022, 11:46 AM

Yep listened to some grand audio systems back in the day. My son, in the eighties, had an audio shop, Bill Case Sound, down in San Antone selling the most expensive and some of them actually the best.

Today considering my hearing after having worked and played most of my life in a pre-hearing protection world, working on construction sites around jack hammers and pile drivers, in coal fired power plants, on drilling rigs, around squealing pigs, playing shooting many things from .22s to 155 guns, I find even mp3 sound storage acceptable. None the less yes, I appreciate a grand sound system even though my ears miss many frequencies.

My Macintosh equipment and speakers are going on 44 years now. The equipment is heavy enough to anchor a mid-sized boat. But, alas, in the early 70s as a Marine near shoulder-launched munitions that went BANG, I deal with tinnitus.

    From the Kunstler article:
Meanwhile, a report out of Indianapolis-based the OneAmerica Life Insurance company, a $100-billion outfit, announced last week that all-causes deaths in working age Americans between 18 and 64 were up 40 percent in the third quarter of 2021 and keeping the same pace in the fourth quarter.

Since Thanksgiving, four people with whom I was on a first name basis died unexpectedly. Latest was my brother-in-law, who died Friday last. None had the virus.

I always wish that people would cite their sources in making facially stunning claims such as Kunstler saying (see above comments) that all-causes deaths were up 40 percent in 3d quarter 2021. I don’t think he made it up, but please, ad fontes!

So here it is, dated Jan.3 of this year on Insurance Forums website: “OneAmerica CEO says death rates among working-age people up 40%.”

“We’re seeing right now the highest death rates we’ve ever seen in the history of this business,” said OneAmerica CEO Scott Davison. And it’s not just at OneAmerica: “The data is consistent across every player in that business.”

Davison said death rates among working age people—those 18 to 64-years-old—are up 40% in the third and fourth quarter of 2021 over pre-pandemic levels.

“Just to give you an idea of how bad that is, a three sigma or a 1-in-200-year catastrophe would be a 10% increase over pre-pandemic levels,” Davison said. “So, 40% is just unheard of.”

One of OneAmerica’s lines of business is group life insurance, which is being greatly impacted by the pandemic.

“What the data is showing to us is that the deaths that are being reported as COVID deaths greatly understate the actual death losses among working-age people from the pandemic,” Davison said. “It may not all be COVID on their death certificate, but deaths are up just huge, huge numbers.”

He noted the company is also seeing a huge surge in short- and long-term disability claims as a result of the pandemic.

“At OneAmerica, we expect the cost of this is going to be well over $100 million, and this is our smallest business. So it’s having a huge impact on that,” Davison said.

He said the costs will have to be passed on to employers purchasing group life insurance or disability policies, who will have to pay higher premiums.
