It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule. — J. R. R. Tolkien
The Numbing @ Liberty’s Torch Remember this classic soliloquy from one of the great movies of the Seventies?:
I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be. We know things are bad — worse than bad. They’re crazy. It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, “Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.”

Black Woman SCOTUS Nominee, Who Is A Black Woman, Doesn’t Know What A Woman Is – William M. Briggs First, let’s get out of the way the most important point: Jackson is a black woman, nominated to SCOTUS because she is a black woman. She therefore possesses the key trait—being a black woman—required for the job. No answer can ever take this from her. Second, even if this black woman doesn’t make it through these tear-inducing (yes, she cried) questions, another will rise up to take her place. And will likely give the same answers.

Malice, madness, malignancy, morons … and us – You waste your time if you try to reason out the catastrophes they’re causing. You grant them too much dignity and credence if you argue what they should be doing instead of what they’re now doing. You misdirect your life if you engage with them or their numerous useful idiots as if they were decent, sensible people. You’re laughable if you try to reform them. You’re delusional if you believe some Hero of Liberty will sweep in and drain the swamp. You’re pathetic if you still, after all you’ve seen and experienced, imagine that “electing the right people” will work for the good of the nation or the world. The “right people” (right in their own minds, that is) are already running things and you will probably never even learn most of their names.

The latest symptom erupting on the diseased body politic is, of course, the Senate confirmation hearings for this Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. The fact that someone who putatively has sworn to uphold the Constitution while spending her career to this point wiping her ass with it is being considered to take a seat for life on the highest court in the land is certainly cause for alarm.

Instead of reducing Europe to a moonscape, it will bring about a global depression that will set off unknown consequences. The world will have a food shortage this year due to the halt of agricultural products from Russia. Energy prices are rising, which will amplify the inflation pressure. Like the Great War, we are about to enter a test of wills where all sides try to bring the other to the breaking point economically. Washington is betting you can starve longer than Russians or Chinese.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision on behalf of these parents. And I want to commend them for doing the right thing, and absolutely we need more parenting like that,” (Police Superintendent) Ferguson said.
…well, Fergie, their “parenting ” got them there.
If only poor parenting were a crime….
…after some convictions maybe some parents would take their role seriously.
I don’t know about that. You can’t create the attributes that are foundational to good parenting or civility, etc. A human has them or he does not and from what I have see those attributes simply do not exist in some races. And, while I’m at it, those folks are generally devoid of every other important attribute for success in life and they don’t care, either.
One of the many, many YouTube channels following the war news has called it: the defeat of Russia in Ukraine (Warthog Defense). An intel guy on FoxNews (Navy guy) informs us that Putin’s SS is his national guard. They do not answer to the military chain of command, and amount to a couple hundred thousand palace guards. So, it’s evident that Putin’s going nowhere fast. He’s got the oligarch’s nuts in a vice, it seems.
Keep your panties on straight! I’m not declaring a Ukrainian win, and I’m not blaming the state of the world on Putin. What I am observing is the near total collapse of the vaunted Russian army, as a functioning military. Whole large-scale elements of Rooskie tank forces going forward, and yet incapable of fighting. The Ukrainian army has a net gain of armor since the war began, thanks to captured equipment. Now, hang on, because in the next paragraph I’m going to contextualize the war within the bounds of military history.
I was watching the Brit thing on Netflix about tanks. In their heads, the Limeys in WWI had visions of lumbering land dreadnoughts rolling all the way to Berlin. The new era of tank warfare was rather a bust, taken in the whole of WWI. The war was actually a grand war of maneuver until it wasn’t. Machines 0f war froze the armies and ended the large scale maneuver war that the generals wanted. They went into the war with visions of fighting a Napoleonic war of movement (Napoleon invented modern maneuver war, and he did it with combat trains [supply follow-on troops]). Alexander was a boss at maneuver, but his armies lived off the land and spent years and seasons herding livestock and growing the food they needed. Anyway, you get the idea: sufficient speed and independence of action was now a thing, and forever changed warfare. It’s called, in contemporary scholarship, an RMA, or Revolution in Military Affairs. WWI was a shock to the slow thinking and conservative generals because they failed to see how industry and war materials would effect warfare. Kind of the opposite of an RMA. It took talented and intelligent officers to unfuck warfare from machinery and figure out how to use tanks, airplanes, good artillery, etc., to revive maneuver. That was blitzkrieg: combined arms coordinated in the attack to produce decisive energy, through maneuver (which is itself old-fashioned. Pincers or double envelopments are cave man shit).
Where are you going with this, Casey? We’ve read this from you before. I got about ten minutes into the tank documentary, and I closed my eyes and tried to draw historic lessons from the current war. What I’m saying is non-partisan so don’t throw your fingers out of joint about Biden-Ukraine-Putin-NATO. None of that shit will be that important to military historians when they write this stuff a hundred years from now. Yes, the political context is meaningful, but I’m asking you to imagine a military context here. It’ll help you when you find yourself on the future battlefield (in your walker, and carrying a grocery bag of Ensure). OK, that joke/insult is as pointed at me as at anyone else. Groan.
Clausewitz did say that the moral is to the physical as 2 is to 1. He knew war first hand. He meant that all the shit from your heart upward was twice as important as the tools in your hand. Enter: the Russian-Ukraine War. Although some retarded naysayers have predicted the end of tank warfare, we can see that the whole combined arms milieu is in action and in a big way in Ukraine. But Ivan has tanks out the ass, as well as artillery, jets, and everything. But, without reasonably talented leadership, planning and training, you get what soldiers like call: the clusterfuck. Ivan simply does not know how to employ his shit. He lacks purpose, and it is as epic a military failure as anyone can remember. You can fail this badly in the defense, and everyone blames that on the lightning offensive defeating the losers. But to suck ass so badly as an attacker – that is a whole other order of stupid. The moral is to the physical as 2 is to 1. Ukraine has soldiers and citizens who seem to be uncorrupt, and whose testicular fortitude (moral resources) is as good as any you’ve witnessed lately. How many soldiers did you bring, asked Leonidas. Because we brought 300, said the Spartan king.
Napoleon: brilliant maneuver guy who brought an RMA to warfare. WWI: a glut of war machinery employed by dim-bulb and backward-looking generals and politicians/ kings. WWII: guys like Guderian, Rommel, and Patton groked how to use tanks en mass and with combined arms for swift maneuver. Ukraine/Russian war: not a revolution in military affairs, but an underlining and an emphasis on the man on the ground. Men versus politicians, tanks, drones. Now go ahead and twist your panties in a wad, because you wanted Russia to handle the New World Order. Sorry, John Birch – reality is a mother fucker.
Here is my light on the subject, if I may try for it. The asswipe Trudeaus and Scott Morrisons (Australia) of the Western World, and Clintons and Bidens and GatesSorosLagardeSchwab(s) desire a command economy and order in the world. You & I are standing in the way, and the events in Ukraine have meaning to those with eyes to see it. People are 3d printing RPGs in their worksheds. Fuck your globalist power. Truck Frudeau. Let’s Go Biden. Also, you better believe Xi is taking notes on how his butt buddy Putin has disastered his war.

Yooks pushed back some ground around Kiev today. Multiple reports (I’m not supporting them but they’re interesting) say the Russian high command has come to Jesus, and revised the war objectives to just Donbass and the Crimea.

HappyAcres is absolutely correct about what happens when you house the homeless. Since most of them are either mentally ill, addicted to narcotics, petty criminals, indolent layabouts, or some combination of these, they have no jobs to go to nor productive ways to spend their time. So they hang out on the streets, do drugs, harass everyone in their orbit, use gutters and alleys as toilets, and generally wreck the quality of life in San Francisco and other cities where they are indulged. After spending nearly 30 years in the Bay Area and seeing their numbers, and the filth and squalor that they create, increase every year, I have no more tolerance for them.
Skorpion,
I just got back from five days in downtown Miami on business. Tried to go to the beach one morning early but it was closed. Riot the night before, some folks got shot. Spring break out of hand, plus, I guess. I had to walk around a fair number of homeless sleeping on the sidewalks as well as several piles of poop. There were some low concrete walls along some of the sidewalks and there were poop stains next to them. Someone is backing up, lowering their drawers and dropping squirrels. Someone picked up the chunks but the brown skids were still there. Geez.
“brown skids were still there” Could be some type of homeless art on display. What . . . “dropping squirrels”?
Couple of times, taking the kids to the beach near Ft. Lauderdale we’d find used needles in the sand. Lifeguards keep a sharps bucket handy for just that reason.
Thank you, Gerard, for the Tolkien quote on Tolkien Reading Day.
I try to keep up.
This is one of my favorite Tolkien quotes… “My political opinions lean more and more to Anarchy. The most improper job of any man, even saints; who at any rate were at least unwilling to take it on; is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity.”
A newly found source of very interesting campaign maps and wrap ups of the state of the war in the Ukraine is this twitter account:
Jomini of the West (@JominiW) / Twitter
An unrolled thread is here: Thread by @JominiW on Thread Reader Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 26-29: The past 96 hours has seen a lot of activity
Those are good threads. Russia going over to the active defense. Stated national objectives of taking Kiev (so far doesn’t look like a given), destruction of Yook military (didn’t happen), and securement of the 2013 annexations (Ukraine: half taken like Russia always does). Major cities are invested, but not taken so far to date, and the first one they did take, Kherson, has floated back to Ukraine control. Remember that Western Ukraine is Indian country, and the insurgency that will emanate from there will be one with the support of almost everyone but Russia.
Without getting into the weeds, my essay upthread says that history will judge this war as one in which infantrymen defeated large combined arms, tank and artillery-heavy armies and the narrative will be the human dimension. World War One, while having palpable human dimensions, was defined by the rise of industrial age war machines. This current war: the other way around.
Leave Russia at the curb. When the troop bus comes by, kick Russia under said bus. It’s good to hold Ukraine’s feet to the fire, but the best outcome for the USA is deterring Russia from triggering Article 5. Ukraine don’t enter into it.
