Something Wonderful: The Ultimate Order At The World’s Oldest Deli

After 30 years in New York City, I can count the things I miss on one hand. This is the thumb.

    Good Chopped Liver too, may I attest.

    I second that emotion. (With apologizes to Smokey.)

    I’ve always said that New York doesn’t have anything I need.

    Until now.

    Now I have this burning desire for a Katz’s pastrami on rye and a latke. Guess I’ll put that on the bucket list. And I can always stop off in Philly on the way home for Genos . . .

    Only made it to NYC once, but was wise enough to hit Katz’ for a pastrami on rye for lunch the first day. Tasty. And they don’t skimp.

    If I was inclined to visit New York, which I am not, I would definitely visit Katz’s for “The Ultimate Order.” Looks tasty. My personal ultimate sandwich, the corned beef special, can be purchased at the Star Deli, at 12 Mile and Telegraph, in Southfield, MI, which is about as close to Detroit as I want to get. If I get within striking distance of the Star Deli, which means within 20 miles or so, I’ll detour over to grab one of those sammies. I actually usually purchase three of them at once. I’ll consume one of them, and put the rest in the bed of my truck, so I’m not tempted to down another on the ride home.

    Also, thanks for the bit of Michigan Schoolcraftian knowledge you posted yesterday at “KA-CHING.” I have a little bit of property up in the made up county of Oscoda.

    Remember it well from the early sixties. Many years later, working on the North Slope of Alaska, one of my buddies was heading too a meeting in NYC, asked him to pick me up a summer sausage at Katz’s , tasted great even up at Prudhoe Bay.

    Robert Mueller was seen skulking around looking for a ham sandwich to indict.

    @Archie B.

    Mueller should probably not be looking for that sandwich in a kosher deli.

    Katz’s is at corner of Ludlow and Houston. I lived on Ludlow during the 1970s and 80s. The locals, we never went to Katz’s. Katz’s was for tourists as the product was inferior to a dozen other places nearby. The best was the Second Avenue Deli. Katz’s looked the part but the food was cardboard.
