Something Wonderful: Making Love Out of Nothing At All

[Observe a classic bit of ye olde MTV video moves in this overly dramatized song. Big love. Big hair. Big crescendos. Pour quoi? Parce que tout les monde désire les crescendo.]

The persistence of a classic power ballad. Same song. Same two guys. Still filling concert halls in Asia 30 years later…because… because… because if you can still sing it and sell it and people show up in large numbers to hear you do it why would you ever stop?

Air Supply is one of those groups that while everybody knows their songs not everybody can remember the group. Air Supply doesn’t care. Air Supply just goes out there. Formed from two singers who met in the chorus of the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar it is one of the few duos that have survived unchanged into our present, less pleasant, era where love is not made and people believe in nothing at all,

nothing at all,

nothing…

nothing at all…

Observe Hitchcock still selling the song at seventy.

I can make the runner stumble
I can make the final block
And I can make every tackle at the sound of the whistle
I can make all the stadiums rock

I can make tonight forever
Or I can make it disappear by the dawn
And I can make you every promise that has ever been made
And I can make all your demons be gone

But I’m never gonna make it without you
Do you really wanna see me crawl
And I’m never gonna make it like you do
Making love out of nothing at all

(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love) Out of nothing at all
(Making love, love)

Out of nothing at all (Making love)
Out of nothing at all (Making love)
Out of nothing at all (Making love, love)

Written and produced by Jim Steinman, the gray eminence behind Meat Loaf, and pretty much the master of ’80s power ballads. Also an inveterate self-plagarizer — this tune, and particularly the piano intro, was recycled from his soundtrack for the 1980 film “A Small Circle of Friends” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5DqV7NaBbg), from which other themes became the Bonnie Tyler hit, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”.

You’re a very persuasive fellow, Gerard … but you aint ever gonna get me to dig Air Supply.

Not in this lifetime; not in this universe, or the parallel universe next door

    WHO KILLED ASHLI BABBIT?

  • Kevin in PA January 8, 2021, 2:52 AM

    To answer Anonymous:
The Federal government of the United States….and she will not be the last victim of this disgusting government.
Apologies for assisting in hijacking the thread, but somethings should not be ignored or forgotten.

We already know who, Anonymous. It was a Capital policeman. We know which one.

To those Capital police, that was a desperate situation. They’re charged with protecting the members and staff. They’ve been overrun by hundreds of people with backpacks containing who knows what. They’re pounding on the doors of the chambers.

And there’s someone trying to break through the barrier to the Speaker’s Lobby. It’s a secured area. It’s another way in to the chambers and the offices. Are the members all out? Are all of the staffers? Do the cops fighting to keep that area secure know? I don’t know if they knew or not. Things were happening very fast.

I completely understand why a cop might shoot in that situation. I do not excuse what he did in ANY way. He killed an unarmed woman who was threatening no one directly.

I understand why those guys broke in. Hell, it was fun watching it on livestream before they got in. And then it got really ugly. I guess that’s why you don’t bust into the Capital while it’s in session, because it *will* get ugly.

Riots are always ugly, and this was indeed a riot. I think it clarified a lot of things. It did not make things better, though.

    Right.

Spoiled headshot lingers to one dead chick.

The sisterhood shaves their legs in protest with, I suppose, a silent disposable razor vigil.

Trump is the legitimate president of the the United States.

Gordon, you’re not only an asshole, you’re a fucking brain dead asshole. When leftist mobs have moved into the Capitol COUNTLESS times in the past holding everyone there hostage, who was SHOT DEAD AT POINT BLANK RANGE? I can’t say this emphatically enough: Fuck you and the Satanic horse you rode in on. Now go back to licking Biden’s boots to Boomer music.

Thanks Gerard for providing a moment of respite from the chaos. My husband and I fell in love to the music of Jim Steinman, and Air Supply was one of our favorite groups. Power ballads express all the longing, fear, pain, hope, and love that we all experience in life. Don’t hear too many new ones these days. Right now we could do with a round of “I Need A Hero”.

She was unarmed and did not present a immediate deadly threat when shot because of the barrier. She may been attempting to breech the barrier, but the barrier was still intact and all they had to was block the breech shw was attempting to create. The correct intervention would have been impact weapons at the breech point if they were reluctant to use chemical weapons. There were uniformed officers with weapons directly behind her on a stairway. I have been a LE firearms instructor and a civilian firearms instructor for years. That shooting was not justified nor appropriate. And anyone that tries to justify that shooting should study LE use of force, and reconsider their position.

PS I was a LE Firearms Instuctor in Northern VA, Fairfax to be precise

    Air Supply?? Who dey?

  • Kevin in PA January 8, 2021, 10:37 AM

    TeeRoy gets it.
The shooting of Ashli Babbitt was unjustified use of lethal force.

Had she been a black woman shot by Capitol Police the nation would be in flames and the headlines would repeat her name and the name of her killer non-stop for weeks. The killer would be fired and charged with murder. There would legislation passed post-haste to address the issue of police violence against the African-American community. BLM would likely receive million$ in funding for awareness programs and all the rest. Instead, this will be swept under the rug. The investigation by the fox guarding the henhouse will find he “feared for his safety” and was justified in his use of force. The killer will be back in law enforcement after his paid holiday. Returning to a heroes welcome and kudos for “risking his life” everyday he goes to work serving his country.

“Government is not eloquence. It is not reason. Government is force! Like fire it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.” George Washington
