Something Wonderful: Karolina Protsenko

“A short video of Karolina Protsenko, child violin prodigy. She and her parents were born in Ukraine and moved to L.A. area (Simi Valley?) a few years ago. She is about 13 now. I think her parents are standing at top left of video with a stroller (baby brother kicking his foot with the beat?)” — AD Reader C.T.

She’s cute as a bug. Great talent. If she put a mic on those feet and developed a rhythmic beat she’d be her own percussion section. Reminded me of Johnny Hartford who would shuffle and tap atop a plugged-in sound panel. I might have been at this performance in Telluride. Saw him there several times. Johnny does some of his footwork around 2:40 in this video.

I think it might have been Celtic Woman violinist Máiréad Nesbitt who introduced that sort of style–the violinist not restrained but instead dancing about the stage. And anyone who has seen Nesbitt flying all over, barefoot and soaring, will not forget it.

This girl has all her own style, and delivers it very confidently for one so young.

Wireless pickups and battery powered amplification do make it possible.

This young Ukrainian is enjoyable to watch, yes.

Some other violin prodigies, without the pickup:

Something Wonderful indeed! Thanks for posting that.

FYI, that’s not any level of artistry. It’s a circus act. Send in the clowns. Oh, wait, she’s one step ahead of me.

Sour grapes, much? She had just turned 11 when this video was posted. Could you play the violin (or anything else) like that at age 11 (from memory)? There are probably 100’s of videos of her playing, alone, from at least age 10 on, in all kinds of settings (beaches, hillsides, banquet rooms, dance ensembles) and sometimes with various professional adults playing alongside her. All of that could not have been faked (and even if it could, why??). (Even the time involved would be staggering.) She has brought a lot of joy to the world, and we expect that she will bring a lot more. We will not be looking for it from you.

BTW, where’s grandpa Gell-Mann? Still diligently “researching” his State Department talking points on Brian Stelter’s blog over at CNN? Or is he just pissed because he accidentally spilled baby batter all over his only autographed glossy 8×10 of Vicky Nuland? Either way, I blame Putin.

Here’s another 13 year old prodigy, from Norway.

A recent phenomenon here in FL is people who appear in shopping center and super market parking lots and blare violin music from PA systems as they purport to be actually playing. The intent is to beg for money. I find it annoying. Perhaps this is where they got the idea.

She has lived in CA for only a few years, from Ukraine. She has posted videos only from about 2018, when she was age 10, I believe. COVID-19 took over the country for most of 2020 and 2021. If the FL people are trying to imitate her, it must be pretty obvious as fake.
