"Nobody wanted these veterans dead, but dead they are."

How is it possible that the government of the United States of America — arguably the most powerful organization of any sort in the history of the human race, in possession of a navy, a nuclear arsenal, and a vast police apparatus —
cannot ensure that its own employees and contractors do not negligently kill its other employees and former employees? Never mind providing veterans with world-class medical care — the federal government cannot even prevent bureaucratic homicide. All of the political will is behind having a decent VA, and there is nothing to be gained politically from having a horrific one. How can it be that, with everybody free to vote as he pleases and to propose such policies as please him, we end up with what nobody wants?

Your Say

The standards have declined all across the board. Literacy, math skills, grammar and speech all losing quality. The expectations are not in place and there is less accountability for ineptness and failure. Today's college is yesterday's high school. Today's high school has such low requirements for graduation that a house-broken chimpanzee could get a diploma.

Where is the quality control? Where are the values which motivate, such that poor performance gets nothing and good performance gets rewards?

This VA issue — I am a veteran, thank God I haven't needed the care, the issue is not about veterans or dead people or hospitals. The issue is failed management, poor productivity, lack of accountability. Within the federal government system it is the same with all departments. Good old boys and chiseling for a larger office and counting the days until retirement and CYA'ing and just plain don't give a shit.

A Czech electrician I worked with remarked: "Chas, in this country, they don't shoot people (for failing)". That might account for all the poor performance.

It's bureauocracy disease.

like any animal that grows too big and can no longer perform its basic function.

We faithful government employees of the VA are blameless here. This failure of Honor and Trust rightfully belongs at the doorstep of You the People. "Fight our wars, we'll honor your sacrifice by taking care of you should you survive", You said. Liars! Did You give us the money to see the job done? No You didn't you selfish bastards, instead you spent it on every frivolous and corrupt boondoggle under Heaven and Earth, and probably a few in Hell as well.

Second, You the People lied again to our soldiers. The VA medical services were for wounded soldiers. No other organization has the deep knowledge, specialization, compassion, and care facilities for the war-wounded. But no, you had to go and make promises to all servicemen (that you had no intention of keeping) that the VA would take care of them … for life. See, these veterans on these waiting lists are dying … of old age, not war wounds. Why the heck should the VA treat old fading soldiers who probably never fired a shot in anger? Those old-timers on the lists now probably spent their career states-side, or in the beer-halls of Germany or Japan or Korea. Their only wounds were carpal tunnel syndrome from pencil pushing, or worn out knees and hips. And after their twenty years, they got a pension and then spent the next twenty years double-dipping in the private sector. What'd they do, blow all their money on stupid stuff instead of saving for old age like everyone else, because they thought that You the People would take care of them? Suckers! … ahem, well ...

When resources are limited, We the VA professionals rigorously follow our procedures. You the People would have it no other way, you can't have Us breaking Your rules and procedures. Government departments must be careful stewards of the People's wealth, and take care that the laws be faithfully executed. The war-wounded get first dibs on care, and the fading old remfs and fobbits being reaped by Father Time will just have to wait their turn.

And besides, You really can't and shouldn't give Us more money. Every extra dime you give Us will just bring every two and four-year draftee and rich lifer, looking for free medical service for every two-bit owie. The supply of complaints and illnesses and pains of old age is boundless, but there are only so many taxpayers in the country, and getting less so every day. Life and death triage decisions have to be made. Difficult decisions that We the Professionals are uniquely qualified to make. So We'd appreciate it if You just thanked us and went on your way, instead of questioning the manner in which we keep faith with Our soldiers.

No, You the People are crazy. You want Us to somehow make good every commitment you made in bad faith to our nation's solders. You want Us to take care of them, keep them out of sight and mind, but you don't want to pay for it. You want the government of We the People to buy nice shiny Solyndra pebbles or planes that cost as much as the Moon shots, but our Veterans? feh, You the People say, who cares about them, we're a post-warfare soft-power coming-singularity diversity-celebrating society, the rough men who once stood watch are an embarrassment, the sooner they're gone the better. And where's my SSDI and EBT and Obamaphone and unemployment insurance and phony-baloney job working in a green power factory making rainbow power systems burning unicorn farts, and the executives all grant themselves fat bonuses and donate to the Democrats just like We do, and every Tomas, Ricardo and Geraldo that makes it across the border gets a free college education, and now we're going to have an Army composed of fence hoppers who have no allegiance to our Constitution, but instead to their patron El Usurper (true blue Americans aren't good enough anymore, they cost too much, too fat and lazy) and the wheels on the bus go round and round ...
