Ding Dongs Dead. 18,500 Jobs Ditto. [Bumped]

atlashostess.jpg
Hostess moves to liquidate after crippling strike The company had warned employees
that it would file a motion with U.S. Bankruptcy Court Friday seeking permission to shutter its operations and sell its brands if plants hadn't resumed normal operations by a Thursday evening deadline. The deadline passed without a deal. The closing would mean the loss of about 18,500 jobs. "I don't know if they thought that was a bluff," CEO Gregory Rayburn said.

Your Say

Strike! Said the Union, to get what you want.
Obama just won, our power we'll flaunt.

Hooray! Said the workers, we'll get what is fair.
To the street they did run, their signs in the air.

Stop! Said the managers, have sense, they did plead.
Eff you! Said the Union, to hell with your greed!

The factories sat idle, no Twinkies were made.
Life still went on, the bills had to be paid.

Bad tidings were heard, from shore to shore,
Don't look for the Twinkies, they're made nevermore.

The union winning over the corporation has happened before and will happen again. The unions won, the union bosses still get to live their lavish lifestyle, manufactures moved elsewhere, and the worker lost... but the unemployed worker will still stick up for their unions.

Gregory Rayburn has cojones? I didn't know any suits still had them.

If you are going to put a gun to a man's head for his money you might want to find one who has it first. These people are stupider than common criminals.

Bomp, bomp, bomp ...

Posted by: Fat Man at November 16, 2012 12:37 PM

I read an article that not all the employees are unionized and that the Teamsters union wanted to get back to work. The baker's union was the union that screwed everybody.

Posted by: Potsie at November 16, 2012 1:12 PM

Wow, the economy's descent post-election appears to be happening faster than anticipated by us pessimists. Can't say just yet if this trend will continue apace, but right now it doesn't look good.

And you know the stupidest part? For the first year at least Obama voters will not blame him. As a matter of fact, it will still be Bush's fault in 2014.

This is interesting. When my husband, a very skilled house painter went to joint the local union, he was struck by the fact that there seemed to be a lot of out of work painters.

As a non-union painter, he often underbids, because he's reasonable, and gouging the customer always goes forth as a calling card of the kind of man you are. Most of his work is referral. He advertised way back in '98, when he got started, but he only had to do it for a year, and he still has about a thousand business cards.

Business has been good for him, because he works alone, no employees, no unions. He's good at what he does and he's reasonable in his pricing.

The unions could learn a lot from a non-guild craftsman.

Just to add a superficial note:

The "Hostess Shrugged" illustration is brilliant. Where'd it come from?

Posted by: Rob De Witt at November 16, 2012 3:50 PM

Today I bought one package each of Twinkies, Cupcakes, and SnoBalls.

I'm putting them in the fuze can (a GI ammo can, about the same footprint as a .50 call can, but taller) along with other examples of things we no longer have or are worthless, like a one dollar bill, the Bill of Rights, a CompUSA service agreement...

Good riddance.
You (union slugs) could have saved your jobs while saving the company that created your jobs...
Fuck you.
The saddest part is that I will now have to keep you from starving.

Posted by: Uncle Jefe at November 16, 2012 7:36 PM

...For every cent that I have to pay for your unemployment is money that should go to my own childrens' future.
So really, fuck you.

Go Galt.

Sign the Secession Petitions in your state. Push the idea. This is about confronting the Black Lenin in DC. Perhaps the dork will wake up before the breakup occurs.

If not, then let the Proggys pay their own way. I guarantee THAT idea isn't in the Manifesto.

We demand that the government take over Hostess. Thats right, put the big O'Twinkie in charge of Twinkies (I'm sure it will only cost the taxpayers a few billion).

Who is Little Debbie Galt?

Posted by: Callmelennie at November 17, 2012 1:39 PM

She's cute and her stuff tastes a whole lot better. Especially the oatmeal cookies...mmm.

Posted by: Jewel at November 17, 2012 2:10 PM

Little Debbie Galt does not deal in devil's food cake. Devils are anti-reason, anti-freedom, and anti-life. Only a whim worshiper believes in supernatural beings. Little Debbie Galt is here to proclaim that A=A, a thing is what it is, and that snack cakes can be a healthful and nutritious part of any reasoning being's dietary regime.

Who can forget her stirring, eight-hour broadcast to the nation? "I swear, by my cake and love of it, that I will never snack for any man's benefit but my own..."

Note to those idiots paying three digit prices (or more) on eBay to buy twinkies and the like.
The brand name, the recipe and the machinery to make them are part of the corporate assets and will be purchased and they will be made again.

With non-union workers. Yum!

Posted by: John the River at November 18, 2012 11:40 AM

Apparently the striking Bakers' Union members are fully expecting a buyer to materialize out of nowhere, buy the company out of bankruptcy, and put them all back to work at full pay.

No really, they think this will happen. I saw a transcript on line somewhere yesterday, workers interviewed around their burning trash can.

Meanwhile, even though the current investors in Hostess are big lefties, as noted above, labor leaders are screaming about how this is all Bain's fault.

The Onion is becoming mainstream.

Nah, El Grupo Bimbo (Bimbo Bread) is interested in buying Hostess. Hah, the Mexicans buy Hostess, exports the jobs and profits to Mexico. Schadenfreude!

Posted by: John A. Fleming at November 19, 2012 3:42 PM

Wait till Obimbo hears of this, he'll declare the Twinkie a National Treasure, the survival of the Twinkie a National Priority, and intervene (that's the polite term for the lawless bare-knuckled Chicago Way) in the bankruptcy proceedings with a newly-invigorated U.S. Trustee. Gephardt's cronies and the Unions will get the filling, the other 1%'ers investors and creditors will get creamed. He'll appoint a Twinkie Czar to "oversee" the new Federal-approved and appointed management team of pastured industry veteran and Party contributors. The slogan is amended: OBL dead, GM alive, the Twinkie forever!
