In 1988, Michael Dukakis famously said, “This election is not about ideology; it’s about competence.” He lost.

If Republicans want to win, Obama’s deeply revealing, teleprompter-free you-didn’t-build-that confession of faith needs to be hung around his neck until Election Day.
The third consecutive summer-of-recovery-that-never-came is attributable not just to Obama being in over his head but, even more important, to what’s in his head: a government-centered vision of the economy and society, and the policies that flow from it. -- The case against reelection - The Washington Post

The catch here is, of course, "If Republicans want to win..." Never forget the greatest political truth of the 21st century:

Your Say

If republicans want to win they have to give the citizens someone worth voting for. The "anybody but Obama", "lesser of two evil", and "vote against Obama" things don't work.
Give the people somebody worth voting for.

The progressive republicans would disagree with you. They are sure they can out-war, out-bread, and out circus the DSA wing of the democratic party.

Why would the GOP ever support a fighter? The GOP voters will busy themselves pretending the Ruling Class choice is The Terminator, despite a career of surrender, and the second best list of perks for the second place occupants in the House and Senate is still sumptuous enough for the likes of Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, and McConnell.

If the same Mayberry types keep disengaging from politics except for a few days every 2 or for years they will always be the slaves of the 24/7/365 political junkies. Nobody will stop kicking you in the balls until you force them to stop and pay a price. You can keep explaining facts to the person kicking you until the cows come home, that is called a distraction, not a solution.

Romney and the RINO crowd will devalue the GOP in 2013 just as they have done after every other recent GOP victory. You can't get new life from the same tired actors, even if they tell you "this time it's different."

The GOP had their fingers ready to pinch off the jugular of Obama's Frankenstein during the first Debt Ceiling battle and they converted that certain win into an automatic hollowing of the military if the Dems simply did nothing. You don't make deals like that if victory is even a consideration. The GOP voters will work as hard as necessary to become slaves and like the middle class German Jews on the train platform in Schindler's List they will believe until the last moment if they just play by the rules a little more faithfully all will be well. Our enemies will see how good we are, or they will feel our pain, and they will stop. They will stop when they have all they want, which is all you have. Any excuse you find not to fight now is giving aid and comfort to your opponents.
