"We come in peace!"

It's really remarkable, in fact, how often the aliens in science fiction just happen to be preoccupied with the exact same political issues that obsessed intellectuals of the era when the fiction was written. And yet it's still somehow breathtaking. They don't even notice that they're not noticing all their embedded assumptions. For example, the scientists do not even consider the possibility that the recent decline in church attendance among the citizens of the world's most powerful nations could be a signal to advanced, god-fearing aliens that we are a decadent and irreligious species who should be wiped out. --Scientists: Aliens May Punish Our Species for Climate Change - Megan McArdle

Or, aliens may give us a pass after noticing that god-fearing humans are avoiding decadant and irreligious churches.

Perhaps that is why C.S. Lewis named Earth, the silent planet in "Out of the Silent Planet." Maybe more scientists should read it.

Well, at least the churches in Brunswick Maine have promised not to atom bomb Hiroshima.

They've matured some -- not much, but some -- because they *used* to fantasize that we'd suddenly realize we were a blot on Mama Gaia's escutcheon and commit mass suicide in remorse.

Is this a theme now? I noticed the Science Channel has been pushing alien attack themes.

I loved the way that later on, in the midst of the aliens' reign of terror, when they're rampaging through the streets of Las Vegas, one of them is carrying the translating machine which is STILL tinnily intoning "Don't be afraid - we are your friends!"
