But What About?

The What-Abouts: Critical Obstacles To A Return To Constitutional Governance

Thanks to the Democrats' bizarre policy directions and public gaffes since the November 2008 elections, hope appears to be rising...but that blimp can be deflated more easily than we like to think. Among the needles sharp enough to let the air out of our gasbags are the what-abouts: the bevy of objections to limited government based on "the way things are."

"The way things are" is often employed in place of "the way things have to be." (This is especially true when the speaker has a personal interest in "the way things are.") Any aspect of "the way things are" that commands a constituency of some sort will give rise to a what-about:

* "What about the poor?"
* "What about the environment?"
