Over 1/2 mile of American Patriots waiting to get into the Mesa, AZ Trump rally. This was less than half of the line plus there were several miles of cars backed up still trying to get in 2 hours before the rally. Who knows how many people gave up and left.

I may have mentioned here that the prospect of a Senator Krysten Sinema has got me off the couch and I am now helping in a very small way as a volunteer with the Arizona GOP. Anyway, it was through that that I was asked to volunteer at this rally. Mrs. Azlib wasn’t entirely happy with the idea of me being gone all day for rally duty, but she granted me a “kitchen pass” none-the-less.
The original request was to be there between 1 and 7pm. However, I received an email from the azgop about 9:30pm the night before requesting that the volunteers show up at 9am. They had originally planned on 15,000 people being there, but that ballooned to 35k and the concern was that anyone showing up at 1pm wouldn’t have a place to park.
So, 9am it was. There really wasn’t much to do initially…..lots of standing around in the Arizona sun. As someone who is well-acquainted with my dermatologist (I think he cuts off enough of me every six months to pay for his kids’ orthodontia), I knew enough to wear sunscreen and a hat. Understandably, the Secret Service was keeping everyone well away from the venue (a hangar, if you didn’t know) until the time was right.
Unfortunately for me (but fortunately for my son), I got a call from my employer that I was needed to come into work. So I called my son and he was able to replace me in my volunteer duties. Those consisted of ushering in the general admission guests into the hangar. Somewhere in the day, the volunteers were told that the 35k estimate had grown to 38k. The hangar itself probably could hold 6-8 thousand, which is a completely un-educated guess on my part, but there is no way that 38,000 could get in there. They were also told that the police department shut down the parking at 3:30….it was completely full.
Trump was advertised to arrive at 7pm, but he actually was early (when was the last time a President was early for anything, much less a political rally?). From what I’ve seen, he gave a pretty typical rally speech, but my son was impressed none-the-less.
Somewhat OT, but here’s the thing that I don’t understand about the 2018 Arizona Democrats……
In 2016, the Democrats nominated a severely flawed candidate for President. If you ignored all her political prescriptions, Hillary still carried a ton of baggage. Cattle futures, missing Rose Law firm records, Bimbo eruptions, Benghazi and her reaction to it (“What difference, at this point, does it make?”), missing emails and a server kept in her bathroom. If you were a democrat, you just had to know that the R’s were going to make an issue out of some, if not all of these. IMO, it was the great weight of her baggage that kept Hillary from winning. [And in fairness, Trump has his share of baggage too.]
But here in Arizona, they appeared to not pay attention to what happened just 2 years ago. Yeah, Sinema’s service in Congress is one of a moderate Democrat. But she also has a huge record behind her that isn’t exactly flattering. Apparently, they didn’t plan on how they would respond to the inevitable unearthing of Sinema-in-a-Code-Pink-tutu, Sinema deriding Arizona and Arizonans, Sinema claiming that Bush 43 wanted to put arsenic in the water, etc., etc., etc. How do they not vet their own candidates?
They don’t vet their candidates because they never needed to before. The media would plaster over all the leftist crap and nobody would be the wiser. But then Trump happened and now WE WANT TO KNOW!!!

And I agree that Trump has performed beyond my expectations. Ninety-five percent of the reason that I voted for him was that he wasn’t Hillary. Not only did I have very low expectations for him, but in some ways I didn’t trust him at all. Maybe this is an oxymoron, but I think I’m a “multi-issue single-issue” voter. One of those issues is guns, and on this count I didn’t trust a Queens-born, billionaire-playboy-reality TV star to understand or represent my views on guns at all. Yesterday, my wife and I went to breakfast. I wore my “nice jeans” and a shirt that allowed me to conceal a weapon. Would Donald Trump ever do that? My guess is that Donald Trump has never, not even once, owned a pair of jeans, and his views on guns prior to his run for office did not inspire me. And so once he gained the nomination, and it was going to be either him or Hillary, I sorta went crazy and bought 2 guns that I’d been eyeing, a suppressor, and three 80% lowers (yet to be finished).
And imagine my surprise when he didn’t renege on his campaign 2A positions. That guy from Queens has actually kept his word (so far). Not only that, but he has delivered tax cuts, brought jobs back, faced down Kim Jong Pajama Pants (as Mrs. Azlib refers to him), knocked his trade-sword with China, pulled us from the Paris Accords and the disastrous deal with Iran, on, and on, and on.
I never thought I would find much in common with a guy like Donald Trump, but here I am…..(almost) completely agreeing with what he’s done. It would never happen, but he’d look good in jeans.
