So another one bites the dust. Oh well. She had better get her booster.

Something, though, about listening to the German language. It is never a pleasant experience even though I studied it for 3 years in college. I keep hearing “Arbeit macht frei” and “Sieg heil” no matter what is spoken. I agree with Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500 – 1558) about that wretched tongue:

“I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to my horse.”

If German is such a wretched tongue, why would you waste 3 years of your life studying it? Bist du genauso ignorant wie voreingenommen?

A waste? Certainly not! I had the pleasure of translating some passages of Hegel. What earthly delight could possibly be better than that! My well-deserved insult of the German tongue had nothing to do with Germanic culture—some of it anyway. Heidegger, Hegel and Kant are beyond me—as they are most normal folks. Goethe, Schiller and Erich Maria Remarque are not.

“Beethoven, Händel, Strauss oder Wagner…” Music does not depend upon language, but on…well, music. You could have mentioned other German speaking composers as well. Do Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Schumann, Schiller, Mendelssohn and Strauss come to mind? I have many vinyl recordings of these guys. Lots and lots. I get a kick out of Beethoven’s drinking songs. Not so much “Fidelio”, his only opera.

Deutschsprachige haben keinen Sinn für Humor. Sie müssen sich beruhigen. As the Joker said, Warum so ernst?

Do you ever sing the “Horst-Wessel-Lied”?

To be perfectly honest, I have had a problem with Germanics since the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD). That still pisses me off. Nichts Persönliches, das du verstehst.

Many of the great theologies are written in German. I don’t speak it, but I can listen to it and sort through some it. My dad could listen to it and understand the majority of it, hence he was always guarding and escorting Nazis in the war.

I do like Charles the V’s line, though. It’s funny.

If some 3-letter agency ever tosses me in jail, it need only force me to listen to Hegel being read in German. I’ll tell the agency men anything they want.

I’m with Teddy: no such thing as hyphenated Americans. If someone tells me he’s a “German-American” I count him as a German. A foreigner. A stranger.

I am half-Mexican. But I am 100 percent American. So-called “Mexican-Americans” are more proud of the flag of Mexico than they are of the flag of the US. Son extranjeros, y sus mujeres son putas bien chingadas.

Same with so-called “African-Americans”. They are really Africans, a fact they prove every minute of every day.

    buh-BYE, fraulein…

    • Mike Austin February 18, 2022, 2:05 PM

Nein, nein, nein! Sie müssen sagen, “Auf wiedersehen, Fraulein.” Verstehen Sie mich?

I am looking for a montage vid of all the fainters. Anybody know of one?
