Noted in Passing: From 1854 a prayer for our present era

Hard Times Come Again No More(written by Stephen Foster) – Logan Kendell sung for his grandmother.

Let us pause in life’s pleasures and count its many tears
While we all sup sorrow with the poor
There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears
Oh, hard times, come again no more

‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many a days you have lingered around my cabin door
Oh, hard times, come again no more

While we seek mirth and beauty and music, light and gay
There are frail forms fainting at the door
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say
Oh, hard times, come again no more

‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many a days you have lingered all around my cabin door
Oh, hard times, come again no more

‘Tis the song, the sigh of the weary
Hard times, hard times, come again no more
Many a days you have lingered all around my cabin door
Oh, hard times, come again no more

So many a days you have lingered around my cabin door
Oh, hard times, come again no more

Emmylou Harris does a fine version of the same song here:

What a great one, simple and well sung.

Mavis Staples has the gravel of someone whose been supping sorrow with the poor for a long time. While the young Mr. Kendall sings it straight, his voice is smooth, pleasant, and never wanders outside of safety. His singing doesn’t pierce the soul the way Mavis’ singing does, and you hear all her hard times as she reaches for the notes. Like a prayer. We’re all gonna be praying this soon enough, if we aren’t already.
Emmylou sings it in such a way so as to remind us all that there is no such thing as white privilege.

I think the Mavis Staples “Hard Times” that Jewel cites is from the 2004 CD “Beautiful Dreamer, The Songs of Stephen Foster”. It’s wonderful and the rest of the CD is too.

From that CD, below is Suzy Bogguss’ rendition of “Ah! May The Red Rose Live Always”. “Why should the beautiful ever weep? Why should the beautiful die?”

I went right to the Mavis Staples rendering. The accompanying pictures reminded me of my dad’s stories of the 3 C’s, Civilian Conservation Corps. His being shipped from Ohio to Arizona and California, sending his money back home as well as mailing his laundry back to Ohio to be washed and mailed back.

Hard times? Attitude was t’weren’t no big thing, just do whatever you gotta do and move on.
