Iconic photo. I saw a couple tools on a blog try to equate that photo to the poofters swapping spit at Chick-fil-A. Is nothing sacred?Posted by bill at August 14, 2012 7:31 AM
I'd die for the America in that photo -- a great country, warts and all.
For the one we have now...?

It was also the last war where we had leadership - political & military - and a populace who knew what victory required and were willing to pay the costs to win. No concern about world opinion.
Nowadays? Not so much.Posted by butch at August 14, 2012 9:28 AM
These days, the libs would be clamoring to court-martial that sailor for sexual assault. Or almost as bad, the Navy would make him sit through a week of "gender sensitivity training".Posted by waltj at August 14, 2012 11:45 AM

America was united during WWII because the pro-communists could help America, for a change. Before and after WWII the pro-communists have been busy whispering in everybody's ear "I wouldn't take that, if I were you." They are usually trying to get every group to snap and work to overthrow the system. The communists know once the helter skelter begins, only they are organized enough to take over. Today's pro-communists now know how murderous and evil is communism and they still support it.Posted by Scott M at August 14, 2012 1:36 PM
Scott, the Communists in the US did not support our entry into the war until after Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa.Posted by butch at August 14, 2012 3:16 PM
I didn't know the kiss lasted that long, man she must have felt down to her toes. But... the situation called for it.
Scott, the Communists in the US did not support our entry into the war until after Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa.
In fact, they worked through the unions to actively sabotage and slow down aid to allies through strikes until the DAY Russia was attacked.Posted by Christopher Taylor at August 14, 2012 5:57 PM
Barbarossa came as a huge shock to American commies, who had been assured by Stalin and their NKVD handlers that everything was cool with Hitler. Until it wasn't. Then like the dutiful little bastards that they were, they shifted gears, followed their marching orders from the Party, and worked to help, not America, but the Soviet Union. Independent thinking was never a strong suit of the ACP.Posted by waltj at August 14, 2012 9:30 PM
Operation Barbarossa June 1941.
Pearl Harbor December 1941.
Americans were largely opposed to intervention in Europe's latest cataclysm until the US was attacked.
America was united because the pro-comunists could pursue their goals while helping America defeat Hitler. The 1940s were no more an example of normal American unity than the 1950s were an example of normal economic activity. Peculiar circumstances made a brief Golden Age for a season. My point is that was an unusual time that is too often referenced as normal from which we have strayed. This is like comparing your best birthday to a regular work day.
Just a reminder to everyone that the "progressives" would like us to believe that one of the reasons The USA sucks is because we dropped the bombs. Those little lefty bastards helped build them in the first place. And of course they weren't the ones about to invade Japan. I hate those little lefty bastards.Posted by JD at August 17, 2012 9:58 AM
Bill, speaking of Chick-fil-A, the Mrs. and I went out of our way to have lunch at one yesterday. Very good! Did you know that you can run one with an investment of $5000?Posted by JD at August 17, 2012 10:03 AM
