FranticMan: "It's Not Like I'm OCD or Anything Like That...."

I'm a birder.

I have to admit. I still bird, but am currently obsessed with bug ID's and photography. Bug Guide is my favorite place on the web. Sorry, Gerard.

Hmmm. I did go through a fungus phase, but they are so ephemeral. Bugs and birds stick around a bit longer.

There was that wildflower phase. That was after the poetry writing stint . . which bloomed after my gardening phase . . . oh, yeah, that followed on the heels of that business with assembling photo albums in order to sort out all the crap I assembled while doing family genealogy.

I need a nap.

Mushduck? A birder? Who knew?

Yeah - I know my sister. She's only napping between migration seasons.

She doesn't have the vest, though. Christmas present this year, Sis?

Posted by Western Chauvinist at August 3, 2009 2:01 PM

Thanks, but - no, sis.

If you ever find me in one of those vests - well, you'll know my brain has shrunk to the size of, well . . . a bird's.

And yes, Gerard - my nom de email has locked me in the amber of past obsessions. The 'mush' was a nod to my then rabid mycophelia.

Pssst, Jen - Christmas present hint: duct tape.

I knew a guy back in the '60s who was one of the first genius guitar repairman - a self-taught former machinist, grew up with outdoor plumbing, worked 12 hours a day, and could eyeball measurements in thousandths. Altogether an astonishing individual.

At one point I visited him and stayed overnight in the house he'd bought for his parents, and after dinner he entertained us with several dozen slides from his new hobby, undertaken after his chiropractor had warned him of the need to mellow out in favor of his blood pressure.

His new hobby was insect photography.

The comments here made me laugh as much as the video.

Well, Rob? Did your friend have a killer picture of Coelidia olitoria? Close inspection of that little fella could raise the blood pressure of less sturdy souls.

Next week I'm moving on to odonota species.

I want this guy on call.

Posted by Andy at August 3, 2009 5:13 PM

If you want one of those vests, Cathy, I actually own two.

Posted by vanderleun at August 3, 2009 5:57 PM

Yeah, Gerard. Stuff the pockets with ammo and send one my way.

I'm taking up skeet shooting.

Posted by Cathy at August 3, 2009 6:56 PM

That's hilarious. I think Steve Carrel could do this guy for a whole movie. Or maybe I could pitch Jim Carey as an OCD Sam I Am. Hmm. Maybe I should blog about this. No wait. I'll Twitter it. Hold it. Maybe there's more stuff about this guy? I could set up a Google Alert.

It's when the past time choses YOU that you can really enjoy the ride. Years and years of neurotic enjoyment and tension.

Now the comments are even making me laugh.
