  • First the Pantry and Then Grandma's New Year's Toss @ the consistently wonderful Task at Hand
I remember best not the right side, which was primarily vegetables and fruits, but the left side, a feast of saltines and gingersnaps, cupcakes and rolls from the Omar man, Jewel tea premiums and products. There were store-bought cookies (almond windmills, iced oatmeal, sugar wafers) and homemade pies, stacks of pie plates, footed cake plates with aluminum covers and my favorite glass bowl with a combination lid and beaters that could be licked by any child patient enough to whip the cream. There was rye flour for limpa bread, tins of herring, bags of salt for cod and ice cream. Because the rule for the pantry was the rule for the house - children could look, but not touch - we spent hours looking at the pantry as we looked at each of our Grandmother's wonders: her collection of porcelain figurines in the living room, colored glass bottles lining the kitchen windows, rickety shelves of canned corn, tomatoes and pickles in the root cellar.

    # Without God nobody gets rich: Benedict XVI is magnificently right

It is becoming an increasingly obvious fact of economic history that the development of economic systems which concentrate on the common good depends on a determinate ethical system, which in turn can be born and sustained only by strong religious convictions.

NOT ALL STRONG RELIGIOUS CONVICTIONS SUSTAIN THE FUNCTIONING OF CIVIL SOCIETY, THE FREEMARKET, AND RULE OF LAW.

ONE RELIGION, SO-CALLED, COMES TO MIND AS BEING FUNDAMENTALLY INCOMPATIBLE WITH MODERN ECONOMIC SYSTEMS: ISLAM.

IT IS ESPECIALLY PERTINENT THAT IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS DEVOUT PRACTITIONERS OF THIS "RELIGION" - ISLAM - HAVE ACTED TO FURTHER PROVE THEIR INHUMANITY, THE HIDEOUSNESS OF THEIR HATEFUL IDEOLOGY, AND THEIR BASIC INCOMPATIBILITY WITH WESTERN CIVILIZATION:

    "Hamas legalizes crucifixion... "

FOR MUSLIMS TO JOIN THE MODERN WORLD AND THE WEST, ISLAM MUST EITHER REFORM ITSELF INTO SOMETHING IT HAS NEVER BEEN, OR IT MUST BE REPLACED.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!
