A lord asked Takuan, a Zen Teacher, to suggest how he might pass the time. He felt his days very long attending his office and sitting stiffly to receive the homage of others.
Takuan wrote eight Chinese characters and gave them to the man:
Not twice this day
Inch time foot gem.
This day will not come again.
Each minute is worth a priceless gem.

Happy Birthday!
But--"Inch Time Foot Gem"? Come again?
Posted by: Jerry at December 26, 2011 6:28 PMYou're starting to cramp my mid-life cynism, Gerard! There's curiosity and there's wonderment but being grateful is an entirely different thing. Thank you for this reminder. I hope you had a beautiful birthday... like a beach.
Posted by: RedCarolina at December 27, 2011 2:03 PMHappy Birthday Gerard. I second what Sara said.
Semper Gratis.
Happy Belated BD! I was away for a few days. MIL was in hospital the entire week of Christmas - thankful that she is home and mending nicely. Like you.
Next year's birthday will be even better!
