What can I say? We had nice ideals.
Original.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’
Byrds: "Wonderful & Retro vid from the band's second and final appearance on "Hullabaloo." This is a pre-recorded backing track with live vocals. Unfortunately Gene & David's mics are mixed low, so we don't quite get the full "Byrds Splendor" as far as the harmonies go. Michael Landon being the host on this October evening, he was riding high on "Bonanza" at the time."
Original.
Springsteen.
Starry-eyed an’ laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an’ we watched with one last look
Spellbound an’ swallowed ’til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an’ worse
An’ for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing
Listening to Dylan croaking out a song, if I close my eyes I hear Woody Guthrie and all the other commies spawned by the Great Depression.
The injustice of it all: that some folks have bigger rice bowls than others.
It was an age of bullshit. I remember the arguments, but I don't remember the songs. I neither sang nor listened to those particular hymns, and why would I?

More Old B.S. Later

We were brought up on Guthrie and Pete Seeger. I'm fairly sure the old man may have met the latter. Never thought about it much. Almost fifteen years ago something happened, that ripped off the veil. Better late than never.
