Long Read: The Germans Are Back!

Yeah … those Germans.
In case you missed it, on November 18, the German parliament passed a law, the so-called “Infection Protection Act” (“Das Infektionsschutzgesetz” in German) formally granting the government the authority to issue whatever edicts it wants under the guise of protecting the public health. The government has been doing this anyway — ordering lockdowns, curfews, travel bans, banning demonstrations, raiding homes and businesses, ordering everyone to wear medical masks, harassing and arresting dissidents, etc. — but now it has been “legitimized” by the Bundestag, enshrined into law, and presumably stamped with one of those intricate official stamps that German bureaucrats like to stamp things with….
It functions like a cult, totalitarianism. It creeps up on you, little by little, little lie by little lie, accommodation by accommodation, rationalization by rationalization … until one day you find yourself taking orders from some twisted little narcissistic nihilist on a mission to remake the entire world. You don’t surrender to it all at once. You do it over the course of weeks and months. Imperceptibly, it becomes your reality. You do not recognize that you are in it, because everything you see is part of it, and everyone you know is in it … except for the others, who are not part of it. The “deniers.” The “deviants.” The “foreigners.” The “strangers.” The “Covidiots.” The “virus spreaders.”
See, although the narratives and symbols may change, totalitarianism is totalitarianism. It doesn’t really matter which uniform it wears, or which language it speaks … it is the same abomination. It is an idol, a simulacrum of the hubris of man, formed from the clay of the minds of the masses by megalomaniacal spiritual cripples who want to exterminate what they cannot control. And what they want to control is always everything. Everything that reminds them of their weakness and their shame. You. Me. Society. The world. Laughter. Love. Honor. Faith. The past. The future. Life. Death. Everything that will not obey them.
Unfortunately, once this kind of thing gets started, and reaches the stage we are currently experiencing, more often than not, it does not stop, not until cities lie in ruins or fields are littered with human skulls. It might take us ten or twelve years to get there, but, make no mistake, that’s where we’re headed, where totalitarianism is always headed … if you don’t believe me, just ask the Germans….
Weeeel, if’n it takes 10 or 12 years this 80+ isn’t to worried. But I am curious about how the younger folks are going to deal with the aging boomers. The younguns aren’t going to want to pick up the tab for that huge cohort that wants to keep on partying on down.

I’m curious about this use of the word “cult” for liberal governments. This is the second time someone said that. It’s an interesting analysis, however I never heard of a cult having the huge following and cultural hand that the Left has got.

They stop you in the street and ask if you’ve been vaxxed yet. They proudly show you their vaxxports. They look happy, in the way pod people look happy. Yeah, I’ve been vaxxed….unspoken part: when I was a kid. No vaxxport yet.
But the real sad thing is the Church. How eager She was to fully surrender…beyond all reasonable measures. How eager the shepherds were to feed the unnecessary panic. We now pray to Our Virus of Perpetual Fear. Meanwhile, the shepherds were all on the take from Filthy Lucre. Our pews are still roped off like crime scenes. And we sit in sullen resignation. The elderly among us are ecstatic with joy. Content, even.
Stasis is everywhere. We were contacted by Contact Stasis when one of the kids was reported to have sniffles. 14 day lockdown. It can really discourage a body. But I am more encouraged by the calm dog in your top story. Animals are always the bellwethers of impending catastrophe. Something more wicked this way cometh, to be sure, but, as the poet said,

Jewel, it was not the Church that surrendered, it was the shepherds. You, me, other orthodox (Chesterton orthodoxy) followers of the teachings of Jesus Christ, we are the Church. The shepherds, so called, who fed the unnecessary panic, and surrendered, well, they really are not shepherds if they have failed the flock, the Church, are they? They are impostors, or, as John refers to them in Revelation, they are more akin to Nicolaitans, whom God hates.

Yes, John, I should have clarified my statement somewhat. The Catholic version of a Karen is Susan from the Parish Council. They stand outside the sanctuary with their clipboards to make sure you use the hand sanitizer and free paper mask. I asked my own priest if they were going to take people’s temperatures. He said he wasn’t sure, but didn’t seem upset if they did.
When my daughter came into the church, last year, in the middle of July, I nearly passed out from feeling smothered in the mask and the heat. By the time we left the church building, I wondered how anyone would want to join the Church given the ordeal.
