CBC said Trudeau and his family left downtown Ottawa on Saturday morning (due to close contact with someone infected with COVID – although he tested negative and triple-jabbed) as the trucker convoy descended on the area. The local news said he left town due to security concerns.
It is way past time to drive convoys. Do not comply. Period.

I’ve lost friends and family members, whom I presume, will never speak to me again. What are the truckers of Canada going to do now? Are they going to ask, politely, if they may have their freedom back? The greatest traffic jam in history and what are they going to do with it? Canadians and EVERYONE should never have complied. They never had to go for a drive… but just simply stopped obeying. That is the most effective protest.

And the venue was not Winterland. The Winterland Ballroom had already been closed in 1978. This performance was at Radio City Music Hall, NYC. I was there. They did 8 nights – 4 acoustic shows and 4 electric shows.
These shows along with several performed earlier in the month of October, 1980 at the Warfield Theater in S.F. went on to be remastered and releases as DEAD SET (electric) and RECKONING (acoustic).
If you like the Grateful Dead I can tell you the acoustic shows were stellar!

There is a very simple fix for those who speak for the State and issue such bans and dictates. They have addresses, they live in houses and they have families. Find all of them in the middle of the night, take them out in their PJs and deal with them in a manner suitable for tyrants.
Can anyone point to a government overthrown by a peaceful protest? Even massive protests causing a change in policy is extremely rare: Britain’s policies in India and the US acceptance of Jim Crow to name but two, but no government was overthrown. Those in power remained in power.
Now, can anyone point to a government overthrown by a non-peaceful protest? There are hundreds of historical examples.
The lesson here is the obvious one.

So, please correct me if I am wrong, but my memory is that Ferdinand Marcos was shoved out of power by peaceful protest. My Philippine friends tell me that the people simply sat down in the streets of Manilla and refused to move until the corrupt Marcos was gone.
What you say is generally correct; that peaceful overthrow of bad government is rare. More common is the bloody mess style of overthrow, which is why the Marco/Philippines stand out in my mind as unique, or certainly rare.
Kevin, you are exactly correct. I had forgotten the overthrow of Marcos—a huge error on my part. It is amazing what the Philipinos did after years of corruption, fraud and political violence without resorting to those tactics themselves.
