The best part of white priv is that I get to pass it on to people who will use it and enjoy it every single day of their lives. I was just in Home Depot a few hours before reading this. I don’t remember how many black vs white faces I saw, but everyone was very courteous and helpful, and the store had what I needed. That’s what I remember.
Ps. I sometimes have occasion to patronize a Home Depot in Mexico. Aside from the language challenge, the experience is much the same, including as I recall a wide variety of skin hue.

It’s so annoying. I live in Maine, and in the area where I live it’s just rural white Americans who have been here forever, (or French from Canada) but if you go into a Lowe’s (our local version of Home Depot) you are welcomed by giant signs en Espanol, but we don’t have a single Espanol person here in Midcoast Maine so it seems kind of odd to us. However, I noticed that there’s been a big change down in southern Maine. They don’t have much of a population to begin with so it didn’t take much of an effort for them to transform that to a really large percentage of foreign folks. But why?

A couple years ago the local Depot had a sign at the front of the parking lot. Buscamos empleados. No English on the sign at all. The second time I drove past it, instead of grinding my teeth, I went to the service desk and complained about it. It was gone the next time I went there.

My Home Depot is convenient. Shop there alot. Customers are black, white, hispanic, asian…you name it. The staff are the same and one of the staff, who I know personally from a previous life, has a Masters degree in science. And I’m a white guy who happens to be fluent in spanish, so sometimes I do a little translation for other customers who need help. Next time I’m in I’ll ask my friend about the white privilege training–I’m sure we will have a laugh. Sad.

I stopped shopping at HD when Lowe’s offered a 10% military discount every day. HD also offers one, but only to disabled veterans; that’s like a movie theater offering discounts to the blind.
Isn’t white privilege an acknowledgement of white superiority? Sure sounds like it.
Home Depot, offers the same 10% vet discount. I don’t even need to produce my 100% disabled Military Identification. I know most on a first name basis, have for many years. It’s a matter of convenience, for us, HD’s 10 blocks away.

Home Depot gives vets up to 400 per year total discounts. Lowe’s until recently, didn’t have any limits except for appliances and items on sale. I think I read somewhere they were doing away with discounts on electrical items.
Although, just a month ago, I bought two mini split systems on special order and got the ten percent. Plus I had to reorder one unit three times before I got one that hadn’t been damaged in shipping. Lowe’s gave me an additional ten percent after my regular discount.

Speaking of reordering. I had to order 7, yes seven, Kohler Sterling full size shower units before I got one that wasn’t tore up in shipping. These weren’t cheap units. But there they were, each one with broken corners and edges. I did finally get a good one and I’ll never do that again. In the future it will be the tried and true mud bed and tile. Stuff that I can control. Kohler has went down hill over the past 20 years. Just like everything else. Caveat Emptor.

I cashed in whole bunch of white privilege after I had the heart attack in ’07. We had no health insurance then, but I had my white privilege savings account that held almost twenty thousand bucks. I traded the savings account for a stent, and a couple days in the hospital. But then we were broke, and out of privilege, so I had to get a job.
I got hired as a substitute janitor/maintenance worker for the local school district. I’d had many years of experience in school work. Within a year I had worked in every one of the schools, and most of the jobs in maintenance. I was the only guy in the system except for the Director of Maintenance who held full sets of master keys to all the facilities in the district.
But cut to the chase, here. I tried to get a permanent position. They hired, and subsequently fired three latinos, and two negroes before I was allowed to have a shot at even a permanent part-time spot. Five guys were put in full time jobs with benefits, and retirement, and they were all fired for crappy job performance before I got a full-time position.
Work is a privilege.
Dirk, the United States Army avoided drafting me. That was probably to our mutual advantage. The school district did me no favors, but my guardian angels prevailed. I got hired on full time, with insurance, and retirement just in time to avoid getting boned by obamacare, and I hung in long enough to make it to medicare. With the heart thing on my record even the cheap ass coverage would have ruined us.
Even though they jacked me around for five years before giving me a job, I put in enough hours that I could buy retirement bennies for a lot of the back time. It was enough. Mary and I made it over the line, and we’re comfortable. We don’t have a shit ton of fancy shit, but our debt load is comfortably at zero. Life is good.
This morning, I took a break while working on my current project, and sat in the gazebo with a cup of re-heated coffee. Buddy the Cat came out of the living room and joined me at the table. Cool morning. Quiet. Coffee, and my best old pal. What is being wealthy? No amount of money could possibly improve on that moment.
My area’s all white right now, over forty inches deep. Sigh, gotta go out and move a lot of that privilege off of and away from around a rig that’s been buried ‘neath it all winter.
My buddy in the Keweenaw has the same predicament, James, though they only have 30 inches deep on the ground. Keweenaw County in the U.P. just passed 300.5 inches of snow for the season. Historically, March, April, and early into May brings another 30 to 40 inches, so they ain’t done moving snow yet either. 1 to 6 inches more predicted for up there tonight.

Jim, I’ve known some decent negro’s. A long time ago, 30-40 years or more, in the army and when I worked in concrete construction. Since the 80’s I have not had much contact with negro’s and for the past 16 years almost no contact at all. Probably been 6 months or more since I even seen one, can’t really remember. Seems they coagulate in the cities and I don’t. Now that I think about it, it was probably about 2 years ago when I seen them, when I last went to the VA. I just don’t have much use for people outside my circle and since the circle is like paradise I see no reason to leave it. I’ve worked a lifetime to get where I am and I’m mostly happy with that. Nature vs nurture? Probably a mix of both.

I cashed in whole bunch of white privilege after I had the heart attack in ’07. We had no health insurance then, but I had my white privilege savings account that held almost twenty thousand bucks. I traded the savings account for a stent, and a couple days in the hospital. But then we were broke, and out of privilege, so I had to get a job.
I got hired as a substitute janitor/maintenance worker for the local school district. I’d had many years of experience in school work. Within a year I had worked in every one of the schools, and most of the jobs in maintenance. I was the only guy in the system except for the Director of Maintenance who held full sets of master keys to all the facilities in the district.
But cut to the chase, here. I tried to get a permanent position. They hired, and subsequently fired three latinos, and two negroes before I was allowed to have a shot at even a permanent part-time spot. Five guys were put in full time jobs with benefits, and retirement, and they were all fired for crappy job performance before I got a full-time position.
Work is a privilege.

Dirk, the United States Army avoided drafting me. That was probably to our mutual advantage. The school district did me no favors, but my guardian angels prevailed. I got hired on full time, with insurance, and retirement just in time to avoid getting boned by obamacare, and I hung in long enough to make it to medicare. With the heart thing on my record even the cheap ass coverage would have ruined us.
Even though they jacked me around for five years before giving me a job, I put in enough hours that I could buy retirement bennies for a lot of the back time. It was enough. Mary and I made it over the line, and we’re comfortable. We don’t have a shit ton of fancy shit, but our debt load is comfortably at zero. Life is good.
This morning, I took a break while working on my current project, and sat in the gazebo with a cup of re-heated coffee. Buddy the Cat came out of the living room and joined me at the table. Cool morning. Quiet. Coffee, and my best old pal. What is being wealthy? No amount of money could possibly improve on that moment.

My area’s all white right now, over forty inches deep. Sigh, gotta go out and move a lot of that privilege off of and away from around a rig that’s been buried ‘neath it all winter.
My buddy in the Keweenaw has the same predicament, James, though they only have 30 inches deep on the ground. Keweenaw County in the U.P. just passed 300.5 inches of snow for the season. Historically, March, April, and early into May brings another 30 to 40 inches, so they ain’t done moving snow yet either. 1 to 6 inches more predicted for up there tonight.
More aptly called “Human Privilege”.

Except some people, of late, when treated shitty drop to their knees and stick their anus in the air, begging to get fucked. HD, Coke, Gillette, etc.
With all the negative history the negro’s are generating, in the absence of gov’t mandate, the blowback is going to be gargantuan. Their overt envy prevents them from realizing how well off they really are. Privilege? Just wait til the gloves come off.
OK Ghost, you no account pecker woods cracker white trash, & yep, I resemble that, I grew up on the Atlantic coast of FL maybe 10-20 years before your gulf coast growing, & I see it as nurture vs nature. I care far less about color than American, dyed in the wool! & yep, I know you’re talkin’ mostly about spades since LBJ’s ‘we’ll have those N___s voting democrat for the next hundred years’, none the less irregardless of color, creed, sexual proclivity, etc,. if they support our constitutions, I’m with them.

Jim, I’ve known some decent negro’s. A long time ago, 30-40 years or more, in the army and when I worked in concrete construction. Since the 80’s I have not had much contact with negro’s and for the past 16 years almost no contact at all. Probably been 6 months or more since I even seen one, can’t really remember. Seems they coagulate in the cities and I don’t. Now that I think about it, it was probably about 2 years ago when I seen them, when I last went to the VA. I just don’t have much use for people outside my circle and since the circle is like paradise I see no reason to leave it. I’ve worked a lifetime to get where I am and I’m mostly happy with that. Nature vs nurture? Probably a mix of both.

I have rarely ever shopped in Home Depot, and this just gives me a reason never to do so again.
Life is cruel and it is more cruel if you act stupid. Gain a professional skill or college education, avoid drugs, crime, and pumping out a bunch of illegitimate babies. Life is a grind, so go grind and don’t cry about it on social medial and especially to your wife. You can’t hurt me. Above all follow the King and you cannot go wrong. He, is your backstop. Pretty basic stuff that is not that complex. Takes a bit of discipline and there will be mistakes and setbacks. Don’t quit. Correct, adjust, and fire for effect. Gubmint is not going to fix it for you.
IOW exercise your common sense muscle to the extreme every single day. It’s a habit that should be developed very early in life, maybe from the very beginning, so that reality won’t be such a shock when it bites you slap on the ass one day.
Want to punish Home Despot for their idiocy?
Go there, load up one of their big carts with merchandise and heavy materials and put bags of cement on top of it all.
Abandon it somewhere in the store. Maybe you did it because you think you “left your wallet in your truck” and need to retrieve it.
The labor costs to restock the materials can be a huge burden to the payroll.
Leave a note on the cart that says “a person of color insisted that I take my white privilege and get out.”
