Fail Whale Falling: 7 Harpoons

TWITTER 1: I suggest there are little gnomes over at Twitter quietly chopping away at the number of followers of anyone even slightly prominent on the right. What can be done about this? Sadly, not much, I’m afraid, other than leave Twitter. As long as the attrition is done slowly over time, as mine was, it’s difficult to stop them.

TWITTER 2: Is Twitter Shadowbanning Conservatives? Sometime in February or March of this year, as Twitter began it’s new “health” initiative — protecting people’s “health” by shadowbanning people so that special snowflakes wouldn’t be “harmed” by seeing them — suddenly the number of retweets for a type one tweet dropped from 40-100 to something like five to twelve.

TWITTER 3: Twitter joins Facebook in SJW crash “Twitter shares opened down 14 percent Friday after the company reported a decline in monthly active users and weak guidance,” CNBC reported.

TWITTER 4: Twitter Admits: Your Posts Will Be Hidden if You Follow Wrong Accounts

TWITTER 5: Twitter: ‘You May Have to Do More Work to Find’ People That Aren’t Shadowbanned

TWITTER 6: Trump Urges Twitter to Push Civility, Thought In a 5,000-word New York Times op-ed, the president proposed a variety of changes to the current short-form social media platform, that would… increase the per-Tweet character limit to 270,340 to “promote deep thought, and careful exposition of ideas,” allow a user to retract a Tweet when he realizes an error, permit Tweeted corrections to reach all who saw the inaccurate original, and introduce a 24-hour ‘cooling off period’ between composing and actually sending the Tweet.

I only use twi ter for breaking news happening at speeds faster than the newsfeeds. I might read an occasional political tweet, but as far as tweeting, I am allergic to that.

Other sosh media? I am on it – for work. Socializing is not my reason for being there, although work is a friendly place. Politics on social media, and news? Fuhgeddaboutit!

Our contemporary marketplace is owned and locked-in place by the Socialists. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

If you’re not reading Drudge, you are not getting the news. It’s that simple.

“I am on it – for work. Socializing is not my reason for being there…”

You’re the 999,991st person I’ve heard say that.
I just don’t see the point of all that social media nonsense. (shrug)

Here’s a new word for Twitter:
    The Shadowbahn.

No dog in this fight. Only Twits I’ve seen are where people reproduce them in blogs, and the word banal always comes to mind. Wouldn’t know a Facebook post if it bit me. I doubt either one could have helped me do any job I ever had, if they’d been around back then. The internet at large would have been useful though for researching methods and techniques, as well as prior attempts to do whatever I was attempting or contemplating. The internet beats the hell out of a library literature search, and I’ve done plenty of those.

There is a Douglas Adams metaphor in the image of the whale falling through the clouds.

Hint: It doesn’t end well for the whale.

The only reason I got on Fakebook is to keep in contact with my family overseas; that’s not working very well anymore since young people are abandoning it. Danged if I know how to keep in touch with them anymore, they’re “too busy” to talk on the phone and they don’t answer emails. Oh well, they don’t like my politics anyway, and they’re afraid I’ll infect my grandkids with a love of freedom & freedom’s tools, guns; I understand, though it saddens me.

Twitter was instrumental in getting President Trump elected, and is currently the major arena for political battle, so I do have some interest in that; it irritates the hell out of me that there is no freedom of speech there (or anywhere, these days) but I hope that someone with deeper pockets than mine will sue the daylights out of good ol’ Jack for his platform’s not living up to their own TOS.

It seems to me that he can choose to be a publisher, so in that case then he’s directly responsible for everything posted on his site & he can censor to his heart’s content; or he’s a common carrier, in which case he shouldn’t put his fingers in the pies that belong to other people. I don’t see how he can be both one thing and the other simultaneously.

Lots of places I hear the same thoughts expressed, basically: “I don’t care about Twitter, Facebook, Google, YouTube, etc, because I’m a proud old person who doesn’t use those things.” That’s great; you don’t want your voices heard, and are comfortable being alone and forgotten.

That looks to me more like, “I surrender the battlefield; I’m tired, and leave me out of current affairs unless you call me on my landline phone- you know, the one with the nice operator on the party line.” YMMV.

Drudge has been my main content accumulator for well over a decade, but I’m now going elsewhere. The reason is that most of the links on Drudge are to places that I don’t want to go without a hazmat suit (the NYT, WaPo, CNN, CBS, NRO- I really don’t want to visit those sites, ever) and his general point-of-view is slanted to the NeverTrump side. Again, YMMV.

These days I rely a lot more on individual websites like this excellent American Digest, and go to Liberty Daily & Doug Ross’ Directorblue.blogspot site for news links- and of course The Woodpile Report. Drudge is still useful, and so is Instapundit- mostly to see what the GOPe is talking about; but I very seldom click on a link there.

Well Esky, you took the long way around but you finally got to the real end. Same here. I’ve been online in one form or another since about 1989 and though I have robust and detailed bookmarks in 5 different browsers they have slowly dwindled down to a handful that I regularly visit with AD at the top of the list. After coming here in the morning I’ll click on “03 News” and scroll down and become bored, then maybe drop in at Cold Fury, or Denningers, or maybe WRSA, but lots of times now I go over to “05 Woodworking” and scroll down and slip into another persona. All about wood.

It’s like a vacation over in that time zone. No politics, no gender issues, and no arguing. Just wood, and the people that work with it. Much like my workshop. One of these days, while visiting someplace cool in 05 Woodworking I might just cross that threshold and go ahead and delete 01-67 while skipping over 05 and be done with it. One of these days. Nice kitty eyes BTW, I didn’t know.

About 4pm I went in the house and made myself a new mud – my blood needed some invigoration. Sparkle was sitting in the middle of the living room rug staring at me. I made my mud and was heading for the door and I saw Sparkle again, so I set my mud down and went to her. She laid down on her side and gave me that belly. Sparkle is a long haired calico and as all calicos are, is a gurl. Diluted. That is, her colors are muted, not well defined like true calicos. Like she had rolled around in chalk dust. Did I say she had long hair? Gorgeous. 3 colors. White tan and gray.

I laid down on the floor with her and she melted. I got a handful of that belly and rubbed her from bow to stern. She laid back and enthralled. Then her mood changed and her hands were wrapped around my forearm and her sharp teefs were attempting to draw blood, and she did, slightly. I said not a word but scowled at her. Then I said, “What did you do that for you silly goose?” She laid back down and succumbed again, and I went back to burying my hand in that acre of dense belly fur.

On the 2nd floor my wife opened her office door and Sparkle’s alter ego sprang into being and she bolted up the stairs to see what was up. My wife yelled down the stairs to me that Sparkle wasn’t letting her get any work done so she threw her out and shut the door. Sparkle then set in the middle of the living room rug sulking until I came in. Another sat afternoon in the life of Sparkle Muffin.

Careful, ghost, this is a family site. (Of a dysfunctional sort.)

I got on Facebarf for the sole reason of keeping up with bicycling events around So Cal. Now my interest in the bike club scene is fading, and Facebarf is increasingly obnoxious and useless. I do not need to see one more misspelled meme pro or anti anything ever again.
I follow Happy Acres on Twitter even though I don’t and won’t have an account.
News and info? Here. Woodpile. Drudge. Ace. Zman. I like Vox Day, Fran Porretto, and Peter Grant as well.
There is no television in our home.
