So Western Civilization has been downhill since “Uptown Funk”—that is, 2014? One can make such an argument, though it would not be a good one. Was it Spengler who wrote that Western Civilization has been in decline since the Peloponnesian War (431 – 404 BC)?

For my money the peak of Western Civilization was 1950s America. It was the highest point of liberty and freedom yet known in History. Downhill since then, sure.

    • ghostsniper May 25, 2022, 7:20 PM

Agreed, and I believe it’s fairly obvious.

    • Fletcher Christian May 26, 2022, 1:37 AM

Sure, as long as you were neither black, nor female, nor any other religion than Christian.

      • Rev.Bro. Generik Broderick May 26, 2022, 1:57 AM

Pimp dance FTW. Forget all that building up of civilized infrastructure. Daggone White Men thanking Jesus, ruining it for the rest of y’all

      • Mike Austin May 26, 2022, 3:52 AM

        Fletcher:

Segregation benefitted both races. Woman in 1950s America were much happier and content than they are today. And anyone who who write what you wrote about Christianity and America in the 1950s should never again write about either topic. You have just demonstrated your ignorance—and not for the first time.

While the US was building the finest civilization in History, England—that dank and dreary little island from which you come—was building one of the largest pedophile gangs on earth under the leadership of Jimmy Savile and with the full support of the British ruling elites. Those were also the years when the British Empire finally went to its final destruction at the hands of Egypt, India, Pakistan, Tanganyika and Ghana.

Envy is one of the deadly sins.

      • ghostsniper May 26, 2022, 4:23 AM

Women and blacks were not better off in the 50’s than today?
        Based upon what?

        • Anonymous May 26, 2022, 1:17 PM

Blackpippo had disadvantages back in the day. Three quarters of the kids not only knew their fathers, they lived with them, which is the greatest single predictor for your life. They had neighborhoods, neighbors who fussed over them and corrected them. Baseball was by far the most popular black sport to play or to attend at dozens of black owned franchises (until desegregation flipped all that right on it’s head). This is what the old black folks tell me, but they could be lying. They compared themselves to each other, not to white people. It was a terrible time. Now they are happy, very happy, except for microaggrassions and implicits and systemics and so forth. Yourtopia is right around the corner.

I did much of my growing up in the fifties in South Florida. I knew a lot of women and girls, blacks and hispanics, and even a few non-christians, as well as a lot of no account peckerwood white trash.

Based on my recollection, all of them, all of us, were far better off in the ways that count than the great majority of those I see around me today.

I’m so sheltered that the pre 53 version is the first time I noticed this song when you posted it in the past. Great song, gets your head bobbing and the mash ups add alot of value, though i liked the original video as well. Great vibes felt in a time when Great vibes are needed. Thanks for posting this Gerard

Hawkshaw Hawkins is a fave of mine from that era. A similar to Buddy Holly story as Hawk, Cowboy Copas and Patsy Cline all died in a plane crash while out on tour.
Just look at those all-time great automobiles (1950’s-early 1970’s) and you have to make cars like that when gas is so cheap and plentiful.
Those who cannot create get busy destroying and deep down they can feel the inferiority of the half baked kook egalitarian workers utopia horsesh1t.
Comrade Karl Marx (Satanist) wasn’t kidding when said his everlasting curses would burn the world down better and two of his children starved to death while he was composing these.

    • Mike Austin May 25, 2022, 6:13 PM

Patsy Cline was a one-off. There never has been and never will be a voice like hers. No other civilization could have produced one such as she.

Has it really been almost 60 years since that damn plane crash? Cline was 30 years old. God I hate planes.

      “Crazy”.

      • ghostsniper May 25, 2022, 7:25 PM

        God I hate planes.
Haven’t been on one since 1980.
Unless the steering wheels in my hands and a parachute is readily available I’ll probably never get on another one. See no reason too.

BTW, in 1980 I flew Western from Anchorage to Seattle and had multiple long and short guns, hundreds of rounds of ammo, and multiple blades on my person in the cabin and so did the other guy I was flying with. Had more guns, ammo, camping and trapping and hunting equipment in the hold. Back when life was still mostly sane.

        • rocdoctom May 25, 2022, 8:15 PM

In the 1960’s I was a student at Michigan Tech in Houghton Michigan–the UP. It was September and I had my shotgun so that I could go partridge hunting. My new roommate was from Iron Mountain, Michigan (also in the UP) so he called his Dad and he sent his shotgun and it was delivered on the bus to Houghton.

          • jiminalaska May 26, 2022, 9:28 AM

In the late fifties, U of F, Gainesville, Florida, kept guns, including my Luger, in my dorm room. Dorm inspections, cleaning ladies, never had a problem.

        • Jack May 26, 2022, 6:49 AM

A wonderful time during those days. My friends and I often brought our shotguns or .22s and other hunting equipment to school so we could dove or squirrel hunt afterward and we left them in unlocked cars.

There were occasional grudge fights after school between individuals and I recall a few roving tough guys but negro gangs didn’t exist and everyone that I knew was sane, for the most part.

But life began to go straight to the shit hole with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act when the damned Kennedy brothers finally acquired the power to shove the bantu down our throats and at the point of a gun. I don’t lament anything that ever happened afterward to those two and the icing on the cake was when Teddy passed into his eternal damnation.

The 1950s were good years but since that time America has bred a shithouse full of crazily demented bastards who have begotten others with greater insanity and so forth and that’s just the way it is.

          • Mike Austin May 26, 2022, 7:22 AM

It was more Bobby than Jack. As Attorney General he began the great shift in US policy concerning the status both legal and social of the negro in American society. After that unpleasantness in Dallas, LBJ waved the bloody shirt over the corpse of JFK to create his “Great Society”, one of the most far-reaching social engineering exercises in History.

But the nonsense really began in 1954 with “Brown v. Board” with the US Supreme Court forcing bussing upon American school children. And it was Republican President Eisenhower in 1957 who used the US military to compel Arkansas schools at bayonet point to allow negroes to enter formally all-white schools.

From this abject surrender to racial hysteria and ignorance many evils ensued.

There is such a thing as great trolling; you are not among them. It is an art, like the art of insult, and must be admired. What you leave is graffiti.

          • Mike Austin May 26, 2022, 4:19 PM

Damn James. Well written and well said. Kudos.

  • Dirk May 26, 2022, 7:03 AM

Fun stuff, killer music, anything with horns and funks good, we’re not on way out,,,,,, we’ve only just begun.

I had the honor of growing up with music, all kinds, James Brown, hardest workin man in rock n roll, Budist Monk chants, Indian music. All fantastic. Some of the best was in lil back woods bars, in lil towns with no name musicians. What a blessing to have been to at least some !

Music is the language of our world

And, I’ll take the US for a thousand , Alex.

Ann, the epitome of WW2 chic-

-Ann made a helluvva soup commercial, too.
I was acquainted with the woman who sang the Campbell’s Soup jingle, we called her “Campbell’s Soup Liz”.

Another foot-related item- Anita O’Day singing “Sweet Georgia Brown” at Newport. You can youtube it and along with all else, dig her feet. She made the hat, and declared years later she didn’t remember the (stellar) performance.

There was a segregated high school in Phoenix called Carver High School. Ever once in a while the AZ “Republic” would publish some story of an elderly black woman reminiscing about her time at Carver and how much she treasured her time there. I’m wondering if you could find any black girls these days treasuring their time in Phoenix’s inner city high schools

The first big high school district in Phoenix was the Phoenix Union High School District. Its flagship school Central High was as good a school as the Jesuit High School nearby, on account of the Jewish community in its district.

Once significant integration had taken place by the Eighties, every PUHS school had deteriorated significantly; at this point they are all educational wasteland. Football teams from PUHS won 4 State Titles in a 12 year period, ending in 1981. In the past 35 years no team from the PUHS has come anywhere close to a State Title. Enforced integration with covert favoritism to black and Hispanic students simply destroyed the sense of community this part of Phoenix once had

Walter Williams would tell of finding the direction for his life in his black high-school English class. Williams, always the goof, was suddenly aware of Mr. Rosenbloom standing over him.
“Pearls before swine, Williams, pearls before swine”, said in the softest unconfrontational tones. There is no longer a black high school student to understand the phrase, or a teacher to use it.

“Mrs. Parker’s disinclination for Miss Boothe is said to have sprung from the familiar but apocryphal incident of the two ladies’ happening to enter a restaurant at the same time, several years ago. “Age before beauty,” said Miss Boothe to Mrs. Parker, according to this tale. “And pearls before swine,” Mrs. Parker replied sweeping ahead.”
