Can’t Believe We Miss This and The Ones Who Didn’t Make It Home

Well…. yes. But then there’s always…

Can’t Believe We Miss This

Remember when we signed the dotted line, our life away (life away)
Such a young age became government property (property)

It’s 20:00 and the Lieutenant just called a layout
Because some douche bag from b co lost his nods (ain’t no weekend for me)

Life was just a game of hurry up and wait
I remember counting the days until that ETS date

I can’t believe we miss this shit, it’s true
Worst days days never felt so right – now I’m stuck in a suit and tie
Wishing I was back with the boys
I can’t believe we miss this shit, yes it’s true

On this bullshit FOB taking mortars everyday
Had sex with myself in a portajohn to get away

Got TBI from my getting my ass blown up
And most of friends are missing some limbs (you guys are badass by the way)

But this PT belt and eye pro will keep me safe
From terrorism, because that’s science.

I can’t believe we miss this shit, it’s true
Worst days days never felt so right – now I’m stuck in a suit and tie
Wishing I was back with the boys
I can’t believe we miss this shit, yes it’s true

I’ve got bad ankles, got bad knees, and even my back is destroyed
But here I am, still stuck in line at the damn VA

I can’t believe we miss this shit, it’s true
Worst days days never felt so right – now I’m stuck in a suit and tie
Wishing I was back with the boys
I can’t believe we miss this shit, yes it’s true

The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home

Tour was up, middle of June
She was planning a welcome home barbecue
Green bean casserole, Grandma’s recipe
There was a knock on the door ’round two o’clock
Two uniforms and her heart stopped
Yellow ribbon ’round an oak tree
Blowing in the breeze

Here’s to the ones that didn’t make it back home
The ones we ain’t seen in so long
The hold up a beer ones, the wish they were here ones
The not forgotten but gone
They’re in a better place up there
But they sure left a hole down here
We just go on living and go on missing the ones
The ones that didn’t make it back home

The whole town shut down, the whole town showed up
Sang Amazing Grace, watched a slideshow of
His 22 years
There was laughs and there was tears
And that preacher talked about sacrifice
And traffic stopped for them Cadillac lights
Johnny sold beer half price that night
And everybody raised ’em high, singing

Here’s to the ones that didn’t make it back home
The ones we ain’t seen in so long
The hold up a beer ones, the wish they were here ones
The not forgotten but gone

They’re in a better place up there
But they sure left a hole down here
We just go on living and go on missing the ones
The ones that didn’t make it back home
Back to that front porch
Back through that front door
To the life they were fighting for

Here’s to the ones that didn’t make it back home
The ones we ain’t seen in so long
The hold up a beer ones, the wish they were here ones
The not forgotten but gone

They’re in a better place up there
But they sure left a hole down here
We just go on living and go on missing the ones
The ones that didn’t make it back home
The ones that didn’t make it back home

My Eldest just re-uped for his 12-16th year. He’s just 30 now. Joined in Nov 2008.
-Our host once posted a pic of me hugging him home after his first tour, back in 2011.:-)
He’s now on-track for being a Gunny this coming year! One of the youngest Gunny’s in these recent times. 2 in the Rocks, 1 in in Sand in Syria, fuckin up the Little Green Men…(Badly, -given the reports.)

And he has watched oh too many not return. I fear this for him, because he has such a gentle heart…

Yet he persists. And still remembers every lost-name from Camp Leatherneck from the day the Marines took it over from the English who had abandoned it a year earlier.
I hope the scars can be healthily “shallowed”…
Oh…And this fall he won a Navy Commendation medal.

    Am I proud?
    Um… Yeah.
    I struggle to be worthy.

    Patvann-
I applaud you and your family. No need to “struggle to be worthy” you are a father we can all look up to, Sir. You and yours fit into “my family as well”.

And so say we all, Patvann.

Good to remember our veterans and those killed in war.

Watching VA, and getting ready to do some work today.

I many ways, America is just a big idea. The constitution and the BOR has never appeared so fragile to me as in these past few years. Shat upon daily by politicians. Derided by liberals. Honored by veterans and decent folk.

    Pats fist on chest. Integrity.

    Casey:
I got up early this morning to check on the Va. rally. Peter Grant has an excellent summary of the absolute perfidy of Northam and the Va. donks. Very sobering stuff.
