Boomer Lovesongs: Dancing in the Dark

File Under: Nobody was ever that young. Were they?

I get up in the evenin’
And I ain’t got nothin’ to say
I come home in the mornin’
I go to bed feelin’ the same way
I ain’t nothin’ but tired
Man, I’m just tired and bored with myself
Hey there, baby, I could use just a little help

You can’t start a fire
You can’t start a fire without a spark
This gun’s for hire
Even if we’re just dancin’ in the dark

Messages keeps gettin’ clearer
Radio’s on and I’m movin’ ’round my place
I check my look in the mirror
Wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face
Man, I ain’t gettin’ nowhere
I’m just livin’ in a dump like this
There’s somethin’ happenin’ somewhere
Baby, I just know that there is

You can’t start a fire
You can’t start a fire without a spark
This gun’s for hire
Even if we’re just dancin’ in the dark

You sit around gettin’ older
There’s a joke here somewhere and it’s on me
I’ll shake this world off my shoulders
Come on, baby, this laugh’s on me
Stay on the streets of this town
And they’ll be carvin’ you up alright
They say you gotta stay hungry
Hey baby, I’m just about starvin’ tonight
I’m dyin’ for some action
I’m sick of sittin’ ’round here tryin’ to write this book
I need a love reaction
Come on now, baby, gimme just one look

You can’t start a fire
Sittin’ ’round cryin’ over a broken heart
This gun’s for hire
Even if we’re just dancin’ in the dark

You can’t start a fire
Worryin’ about your little world fallin’ apart
This gun’s for hire
Even if we’re just dancin’ in the dark
Even if we’re just dancin’ in the dark
Even if we’re just dancin’ in the dark
Even if we’re just dancin’ in the dark
Hey baby…..

    Thanks for this one, Gerard.
Odd. I am not a fan of Springsteen at. all. Nonetheless, this is one of those all-time-favorite song list songs that time-warps you to just *that* moment back when, and where. It’s also good for about twenty-five over the speed limit if you hear it on the highway.
I had another taste of old-song time warp this weekend. We had our monthly bike club ride, and we joined up with The Pedalwhips, and several other clubs for BBQ and party at the beach. Everyone brought out the shiny stuff, the Sunday-go-to-meetin’ stretch bikes. The guy who does the Venice Electric Light Parade brought his concert quality sound trailer, and blasted a classic rock, and eighties play list. We partied hard, and hit the bike trail heading toward the pier. We had a big pack, half a dozen different clubs, thirty some stretch cruisers, not counting the regular beach cruiser bikes. Steppenwolf blasting Magic Carpet Ride.
One more time, we ended up being the stars of heaven only knows how many smart-phone videos.
It was fun. Fun like medicine for the spirit.

Born to Run was a great album. It was all downhill after that.

IIRC, Springsteen had written Hungry Heart for the Ramones, and his manager told Bruce he would quit if Bruce gave away Dancing in the Dark.

This song always reminds me of being an Air Force brat in England, listening to the base radio station in the evening before the music was cut off for the night. This, and “I wear my sunglasses at night.” I was too young to get what the songs were about, but they stuck with me. The lyrics seem very odd when you’re eight.

He turned into a whiny, fucking punk but he was good. I saw him in Denver when this was popular and it was a rockin’ show.

Deleted all hiz moozik after hiz tirade in Germany waving an “F-Trump” flag. “ashamed to be an American” he sez. I change all radio stations when the first note is played. An 00bama-bot. I’ve shot pool with the dude and drove Nils Lofgren and Gary Talent around town. The DUI drunk sucks. https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2016/06/bruce-springsteen-concert-germany-fck-trump/

Sorry not sorry. I’m done with Springsteen.

  • ghostsniper July 15, 2021, 4:26 AM

Like Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart, and several others, never understood how this punk was a thing. His schtick is cheap, transparent, and completely devoid of tangible substance. 60’s AM radio stuff and not meant to be taken seriously, or at all.

It’s easy Ghost. Just pay attention to the douche bags who support him.

  • EX-Californian Pete July 15, 2021, 9:42 AM

Even when I was young, I never liked the guy or his music. It always sounded like fake americana commercialized wannabe rebel garbage to me. He’s commie trash.

Recall in the beginning when PlayBoy mag, called ol Bruce the next Jimmy Hendricks, I laughed then, I’m still laughing. Ghost, we scored tickets to Rod Stewart Oct 2nd at the Nugget in Reno. The album Every Picture Tells A Story, is a rock n roll classic, as is Gasoline Alley. The drumming in both is amazing.

I just happen to have the first mention on the big stereo as I write this. Classic Stewart at his finest. I’m ( Know) I’m Loosing you,,,,,,,is up, level7 on my klipsch corner horns, five ft tall, four ft wide bad ass speakers! Thru a tube Quick Silver amp. Awesome!

He hates America. Give him a quart of cheap gin and a gas station burrito, then let him drive a Jeep off a cliff. I don’t care.

  • Geo July 15, 2021, 12:50 PM

He sucks…..couldn’t act and can’t sing worth a shit.

  • Klaus July 15, 2021, 2:11 PM

He’s a dick. But young a Courtney Cox sure was a cutie.

  • ghostsniper July 15, 2021, 2:25 PM

She turned into a wrinkled dik too.
Snake sed Gas Station burrito….that’s been laying on the dashboard for 3 hours.

  • rabbit tobacco July 15, 2021, 8:00 PM

Darkness on the edge of town was it for me.

  • Tom Hyland July 16, 2021, 7:41 AM

Amazing to learn… rock ‘n rollers and movie stars ain’t nice people. A lot of them are pretty stupid, too. Watching Eric Clapton whining about taking BOTH jabs… at the expense of his physical abilities… well, that’s plain stupid. I don’t hang with these jerks. I gotta install microwave ovens, custom kitchen deliveries. I gotta move these refrigerators… I gotta move these color TV’s.

  • Vanderleun July 16, 2021, 10:54 AM

As was said in the beginning as is true now:

It’s the song and not the singer.

I’m always focused on the song at the time it was created not how deep into the sewer the singer descended in his dotage thereafter.

  • ghostsniper July 16, 2021, 5:44 PM

I can see that. Early Elton John for example. That was who he was then, and now, as far as I’m concerned. Probably in the late 70’s he turned into someone else and I have nothing to do with that monster. EJ died in 1978 and a intellectual misfit hijacked his identity.

  • AC July 16, 2021, 6:54 PM

Bruce knows he’s an a-hole and that he sold the very crowd he sung about and made his money from down the river. He don’t look to content these days and it looks good on him.

    Adios bruce.

  • Gordon Scott July 16, 2021, 6:55 PM

I saw his recent concert movie Western Stars. I liked it. Yeah, it was pretty pretentious having him walking and driving around in what looks like Arizona desert. Him and the 38 other people it takes to shoot movie film of some old guy. The actual songs were recorded in his barn in the high desert country of New Jersey.

It’s an entertaining video. He’s backed by his wife Patti and a 30-piece orchestra. The guys in the audience enjoyed it. The women swooned. The last song is a tribute to one of Ghost’s favorite artists.
