Where the Sidewalk Ends
There is a place where the sidewalk ends
And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.
Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.
Yes we’ll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we’ll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.

The People Yes
The steel mill sky is alive.
The fire breaks white and zigzag
shot on a gun-metal gloaming.
Man is a long time coming.
Man will yet win.
Brother may yet line up with brother:
This old anvil laughs at many broken hammers.
There are men who can’t be bought.
The fireborn are at home in fire.
The stars make no noise,
You can’t hinder the wind from blowing.
Time is a great teacher.
Who can live without hope?
In the darkness with a great bundle of grief
the people march.
In the night, and overhead a shovel of stars for keeps, the people
march:
“Where to? what next?”

For me, “Anthem” is an understatement with this song . A true story: I had just moved, the day before, to the city where my father was hospitalized and didn’t yet have my phone hooked up. Dad took a turn for the worse overnight and mom had no way to contact me. The hospital sent the cops to bang on my door at 6 AM to tell me I was wanted at the hospital. They offered to give me an immediate ride there. I elected to first shower and shave and drive myself. I got there exactly five minutes after he passed. This song came out immediately after.
He and Paul young were the lead singers for Mike and the Mechanics back in the 80s(?). They had some great tunes and Rutherford is an outstanding guitar player. I still play their first 2 albums all the time. He also sang lead on M&M’s first huge hit, Silent Running-now there’s a prescient song if there ever was one. Great voice.

Funny thing was M&M was just a side gig for Rutherford.
