Boomer Anthems: River Deep, Mountain High

A Collection of different live Performances of River Deep Mountain High by Tina Turner. Watching this video you can see why Tina Turner has sold more concert tickets than any other female artist in history. (And check out the CROWDS! Do you really think that death could stop the music, stop the signal, stop the gatherings? I don’t think so.)

Then there is the original Phil Spector masterpiece:

The thing with Ms. Turner is she knows she’s working and she loves her work. Loved that complication!

How or why Turner’s original “River Deep, Mountain High” single never skyrocketed to Number One is not in my interest to find out, because long ago I just stopped paying attention to pop music business personalities and their machinations.

But I’ve always loved that recording. It is a tour de force that should have zoomed to the cop of the charts (and I can understand why Phil Spector despaired because the record flopped). It’s superb not just because of Turner’s powerful yet nuanced vocal – achingly restrained when restraint was needed, and bursting with bravura energy when energy was needed, but it’s also superb because of the phenomenal backing she got on it from The Wrecking Crew’s session musicians.

Got a ripple of chills listening to the Spector version again. They were all young and at their very best, and it is just superb. Love this amazing song.
