Boomer Anthems: Nights on Broadway (“Here we are / In a room full of strangers”)

Here we are
In a room full of strangers
Standing in the dark
Where your eyes couldn’t see me
Well, I had to follow you
Though you did not want me to
But that won’t stop my lovin’ you
I can’t stay away

Blamin’ it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin’ them love songs
Singin’ them straight to the heart songs
Blamin’ it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin’ them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town

Now in my place
There are so many others
Standin’ in the line
How long will they stand between us
Well, I had to follow you
Though you did not want me to
But that won’t stop my lovin’ you
I can’t stay away

Blamin’ it all (blamin’ it all)
On the nights on Broadway (blame it on the nights on Broadway)
Singin’ them love songs
Singin’ them straight to the heart songs
Blamin’ it all (I’m blamin’ it all)
On the nights on Broadway (blame it on the nights on Broadway)
Singin’ them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town (oh those nights)

I will wait
Even if it takes forever
I will wait
Even if it takes a lifetime
Somehow I feel inside
You never ever left my side
Make it like it was before
Even if it takes a lifetime, takes a lifetime, ooh

Blamin’ it all (I’m blamin’ it all)
On the nights on Broadway (blame it on the nights on Broadway)
Singin’ them love songs (yeah, yeah)
Singin’ them straight to the heart songs (yeah, I’m blamin’ it all)
Blamin’ it all (blamin’ it all)
On the nights on Broadway (blame it on the nights on Broadway)
Singin’ them sweet sounds (oh yeah)
To that crazy, crazy town (yeah)

Blamin’ it all (I’m blamin’ it all)
On the nights on Broadway (blame it on the nights on Broadway)
Singin’ them love songs (yeah, yeah)
Singin’ them straight to the heart songs
Blamin’ it all (I’m blamin’ it all)
On the nights on Broadway (blame it on the nights on Broadway)
Singin’ them sweet sounds (oh yeah yeah)
To that crazy, crazy town (yeah)

Blamin’ it all (I’m blamin’ it all)
On the nights on Broadway (blame it on the nights on Broadway)
Singin’ them love songs (yeah, yeah)
Singin’ them straight to the heart songs
Blamin’ it all (I’m blamin’ it all)
On the nights on Broadway
Singin’ them sweet sounds

I’ve been binging on Bee Gees this year. Glad to see there are other fans “nearby”!

They were really fine songwriters, but don’t get the credit they deserve because they were never innovators but simply adapted to the styles of the day.

For example, Barry Gibb wrote the great To Love Somebody for Otis Redding in 1967, but Redding died before he got the chance to perform it (and you can totally imagine him doing so). Later, they weren’t trying to write “disco” music, rather, just in the R & B idiom of the day. Not their fault that disco devolved into such a formulaic self-parody.

Largely because of Dylan and the Beatles, everyone had to “innovate,” such that mere craftsmanship was frowned upon. But good craftsmanship beats bad innovation every time.

Great old band, for sure. But I cringe a bit when I remember that I too wore clothing like that back in those days. WTF was I thinking?

It’s difficult to believe they came from the same parents, except for the great voices.

Robin and that handheld monitor speaker at his ear: Frankie Valli uses the same device to sing falsetto.

    Were we ever that thin?!

And it’s Ed for the win.
