Coincidentally (vis a vis your last post), Gerard, cue Mark Twain. Some exaggeration here I understand … but thanks for the reprise; much needed on this day. Let’s hope he’s luckier than 58 (so far) of sin city’s victims. Get well soon, Tom.

Puerto Vallarta late 80s – there was a bar that played VH-1 – a cooler, bit more mature playlist than MTV; a bunch of us gathered, friends, newbies, tourists, crazies, a sociable crew; I remember this video playing; good vibes, good times, good memories.
I saw TP and Dylan at the Tacoma Dome in 19something. Maybe the best concert I ever saw, and the sound mixing was glorious. Tom is known for his love of that.
I feel he deserved a bit more than he got from the universe.

No doubt the music in that land will be glorious, and no doubt that Christ is more forgiving than most people realize, but on His terms, not ours. He after all is God, and we’re not. Acts 2:38
I’m gonna get pilloried for this but here goes…
Petty’s music was just that: Petty.
3-4 chords, endless repetition, insipid voice with no range whatsoever, uninspired lyrics any middle-schooler could write, guitar “solos” (just glorified riffs, actually) that I could have produced in my sleep at 16 — and I was a bass player.
One thing he was good at; leveraging his clout to get great studio musicians to back him up. They made him sound a helluva lot better than he actually was. I was in the L.A. music scene for a number of years and I learned how that game was played.
The only thing he ever did of note was to hook himself up with the Willburys and than rode that pony for the rest of his forgettable career.
And let’s not forget his forgettable performance in that bomb of a flick “Waterworld”.
Oh, and let’s also not forget all the “valley girls” loved him even though he hated them.
A complete mediocrity that’s now being lionized as the second coming.
And truly great musicians like Pat Metheny and Jeff Beck toil away in obscurity.
Such is the sad state of American music.

Saw Petty and the Heartbreakers back @1995, fantastic show, some dog walked on stage in the middle of it and laid down.
Just recently bought some live cd’s, suppose I’ll be buying more.

Fuel is right and every “player” knows it.
Petty rode that “media wave” to success and there was no shortage of unknowledgeable people to propel him to the heights he achieved. His work was tolerable but just barely so and he never made a red centavo off’n my ass. All his shit sounded the same and his voice was right up there with Willie Nelson.

More truly great musicians who never got their due while Petty’s fanboyz are soiling themselves:
Robbin Ford, SRV, the entire Mahavisnu Orchestra (minus their horrible bass player), Jack Bruce, Warren Zevon and the musical genius David Lindly.
All ignored by the supposedly “music loving” public.
And this fool Petty (and that overrated prick Springsteen) get all the album sales and slobbering praise while these other guys are (or were) busy making great music year after year.
The “players” always know who the pretenders are.
Forty years of hits, constant radio play, album sales and packed concert halls…yup, what a complete failure.
Just ask those real “players” who cherish obscurity and poverty, ’cause that’s the hallmark of success! That and petty jealousy…throw in some name calling anyone who doesn’t agree with you and now we’re talkin’ legit music aficionado.
I especially love when they preach what music/musicians should be famous…even though they can’t spell their own hero’s name correctly – Robben Ford.
Bonus points for talking shit of the “untalented” when they die.

Ever been in the studio to record? I have. Dozens of times.
Ever played so much and so hard you had to find a sub because your wrist or hand hurt so much you had to give it a rest for a couple of days and lost some income because of it? I have.
Ever had your voice blow out so someone else in your band had to take over the lead singing even though his voice wasn’t worth a warm bucket of spit? I have.
Ever? On any of those counts? Yeah. Didn’t think so.
I’m far, far more qualified to have an opinion on musicians than most, if not all here. Especially the likes of fools like you.
