It’s almost as if the Japanese have cultivated a cult of pathological silliness to offset the reality that they need to behave like worker drones in an ant colony most of the time

    What Lennie said.
Samurai ethos has devolved into that.
Western Civ has devolved into Drag Queen Storytime at the library.
It’s all crap, and we need to see it,and share it with the unaware.

I lived in southern Japan in the late 70s and everything seemed pretty normal. Sararimen going to work, housewives managing the home, and kids everywhere saying “this is a pen” (they wanted to practice their English with me). The weirdest things that I saw then were guys in their early 20s who just got their first job, bought a rice rocket, and then would hang out dressed as greasers at the corner store while blasting 50’s music. Sort of the first version of cosplay, possibly. Japan has gotten so much more extreme in their weirdness since then – it may be pathological.
